I am gussing here, but why not put a 12v or 5v line from a PC power supply to the power block and wire one of these to make sure that it does not spike: http://www.radioshack.com/sm-5v-fixed-voltage-regulator-7805--pi-2062599.html |

I think that would break things because your adding more volts to exsisting volts which would exceed the 5V limit, i think. |

That is the point of the voltage regulator. |

Actually, you make sure that the regulator is the last thing before the block. That way it will not exceed 5v. |

I use a lot of the 5v regulators for Arduino Projects and for LED's. I have pushed them up to about 30v and they work great. I have never gotten anything higher then 5v out. |
