Marvel Arcade - ARTWORK DOWNLOAD LINK
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:11:03 pm »
OK,

this is my new project I have undertaken, Marvel Arcade.

As a kid I always enjoyed watching cartoons like X-Men and Spider man. Even more so I loved reading the Marvel comics. However, I was deprived of games as a kid. The console was replaced for a book and education was a main priority. My only saving grace was the arcade. A young lads haven of gaming genius with awesome games such as Bubble Bobble, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and of course Marvel vs Capcom (I loved that game!).

I have attached some of the artwork I have been working on. It isn't completely finished but it is nearly there.

Let me know what you guys think!

This is the link to download the artwork (all in ai format):

Looks great! Very impressive!  8)

Have you got any plans/ideas for the cab itself? Size/shape/components etc?

CHEERS!

Yeah, I have some plans, but they need reworking. I have uploaded them but my CAD skills are non existant!

I am going with Magstick plus joysticks with ball tops, ultimarc buttons, a Happ 3" trackball illuminated in red courtesy of Divemaster and black admin buttons with a TT2 spinner in the centre (top). I also have some labels for them courtesy of Pongo.

The cab is going to be a variation of Knievel's Woody but with a few twists.

I am using a 19" AG Neovo F-Series LCD screen to keep the size a weight down.

PC is a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a few upgrades such as ram and graphics card to provide an edge.

Plan to have a one button start too so that it is easier to use.

Front end will be Maximus Arcade with custom skin.

Would you like me to put those dimensions in the PDF into AutoCAD to see what the actual profile looks like?

Well I had some spare time this morning so I had a go anyway.

The profile on the left is the one drawn with the dimensions from the top drawing, the second is with the 100mm radius that you added on the second page:

I extruded the side panels to 18mm and added the 600mm panels as best I could to the drawing on the second page.

Let me know if I can do anything else.

OMG! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :notworthy:

I really appreciate your help! I am so bad at doing the plans electronically! So have to revert to good old fashioned pen and paper!

I am due to draw up some fresh plans so that they are neater, would it be OK if you helped me out when I post them?

Generally, what do you think? Is there anything you think I should change? Does it look neat/clean?

THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!  ;D

OK, I was thinking about a few small changes (excuse the paint job, I'm at work!)

On the left:

I thought about making the parts where the arrow points to longer. The bottom arrow is where the keyboard tray and prob needs to be longer and the second arrow on top is the back support for the CP and prob also needs to be longer.

On the right:

I was thinking about mounting my one button push start on the bit where the arrow points to. That way it is out of the way and behind the CP.

You can also see how I plan to hide the castors on the bottom of the cab.

Your more than welcome :)

Okay, I made the two changes. I also put a 100mm rad on the section just below the keyboard draw to even it out a little.

(old profile on the left, new one on the right)

And the model:

I imagine you want the cp shelf at the same height so I left that where it is and extended the other sections by 50mm.

The depth of the monitor needs adjusting on the new model but I can do that tomorrow morning, im nearly late for work!

That looks way better! THANKS!

Great assumption on the CP, I did want that at the same height!

I was thinking of having the monitor part slightly angled more upward so I could have the bezel angled but that it wouldn't be too far down. (see attached)

In terms of angles and sizes, will the program you are using tell you the correct angle and sizes to use? If so, WOW! That would save me SO MUCH time and money it would be unreal!

In return, if you need help with any artwork I will do my best to help, but judging by your computer skills I doubt you will! But the offer is there!

Again thanks for the help!

BTW, great work on the ARK project, those U360's look insane!

No probs, im happy to help.

Yeah when you are happy with the final profile etc Ill do you a drawing with all of the dimensions on.

Would you like to sort the profile out over PM rather than take up your thread with posts and posts of changes? Im not bothered either way, I just dont want to clutter your thread up.

Thanks for the offer of the artwork. I have someone working on some for me at the moment (I havent got a clue about graphics programs apart from Paint  :P) but Ill keep you in mind for anything in the future. Thankyou.

a quick comment on your marquee.
To me, it looks odd having two characters on one side and three on the other. To the right of Spider-man, you have this big gap. I don't know if you should fill the gap or remove a character from the right side.
Thoughts?

Lol. Sorry about that! There is another character going on, I just haven't decided who! Was thinking Captain America, but couldn't find a suitable image, or Wolverine, or Cyclops.

Going for the Good vs Evil theme.

Thanks you for the comments and help so far! It really helps move the project along and really gives some motivation too!

BTW, does anybody know where to get 15mm MDF from the UK? I was going to use it and mount 3mm polycarbonate on top in order to get the 18mm I need for the t-molding. It is so hard to find for a decent price!

Didn't know you was from the UK, me too

You may struggle to get 15mm MDF without paying silly money. You can just use 18mm MDF then offset the t-slot by 3mm and then put a radius or chamfer on the bottom 3mm of the CP. Take a look at .:this:. thread for some more info.

Ahhhhh! So that is how it is done!!!

I was wondering how they did that for like a year now!

I found this handy little place though!

http://www.mdfcuttosize.com/index.php

Only have to pay for what I need! And I can pick it up as I live in London!

Might even ask them to cut the sides out if they can and once I have the plans!

AWESOME!  :applaud: What part of the UK are you from?

CALLING ALL UK! I sense a meet up coming!

Franco, is it still OK for you to draw these plans up electronically?

OK,

I ordered my fans for the cabinet today! I got 2 of these:

http://www.acoustiproducts.com/en/acoustifan.asp

I ordered the 80mm versions. I bet you are thinking why not the 120mm versions?

Well,

1. To save a bit of space at the back
2. As these are nearly 3 inch I plan on making a template for my router to use on these holes and also as the hole for the trackball in the CP polycarbonate. I plan to make this template using a flush trim bit and the mounting kit hole!

I was thinking of ordering another 2 and placing them near the top (on the angled part) of the cabinet. That way I will have 2 sucking in air and 2 blowing hot air out (as hot air rises). I am a bit worried though that this will drain the power in my PSU as it is already limited.

I got this idea from Jimbo's cabinet. You can see that here:

Maybe it's just me but I'd be worried about stability with a base that's not that deep (500mm). Most traditional American cabinets are in the 24-30in range (609-762mm). I'm guessing by the depth that you're not using a CRT monitor, but in the middle of a game, sometimes the controls can be pushed/pulled on quite a bit. You definitely don't want it to topple on you (or your guests). You could just shift the front of the bottom section forward and still leave the top at 500mm. It would be similar to the design of the later Neo-Geo cabs from the US. One other possible solution might be to leave the sides as they are and build out the front under the CP (seen Neo-Geo pic #2).

If I'm calculating correctly, you also might want to reconsider the height of the control panel. Out of the three cabinets that I have in my apartment, Both my Neo-Geo (the same model as the first previous example) and my Frogger control panels have their front edges starting at about 35.5in (901.7mm) from the ground.  As a 6-foot tall person (1,828.80mm  :)) it's at pretty much the perfect height. If you're taller (or have shorter arms) you may prefer it higher.

At this point I'm wondering why the whole world can't just use the Metric system.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Thanks for your comments.

In terms of the depth, I went for this because I wanted to keep the cabinet slim. There will be significant weight on the back of the cabinet from the computer (as it will be mounted at the back) and the subwoofer. The LCD (yes, you guessed right ;)) will also be angled slightly back giving a little more weight to the back.

I also plan on using rail castors. The joy of these are that I can angle the machine slightly backwards by adjusting the front ones height to be a little more. It won't be noticeable but will make a difference.

In terms of height. I feel that a good height for me is 965mm. I put 1000mm height as the CP will be angled down by 30mm so the CP edge will be approx 970mm of the ground (slightly less as the CP edge will continue past the Box that hides all components, prob around 968mm). I tried 900mm on a box and I felt like a had to lean over the CP. I am aiming to keep my back fairly straight. I am also 6 foot, but my bro is 6' 1" and my dad is 5' 11" so I put the height that would be good for me as I am in the middle (and it is my cab! lol).

Here are the redrafted plans.

Franco, if you need anything just drop me line. Thanks again!

Okay buddy, here ya go...

I set the 12mm panels in 10mm like we talked about. I left the base panel as 18mm as that will be taking the weight of the cab.

I also did a couple of 3D views and put your art on for you as best I could.  As you probably know your art isnt in the same aspect ratio as your panels so I just applied the art at in its normal ratio to the extents of the panels.

I made the cab red as you cant see half of the detail when its black. There probably is a better way to display it when its black but I dont know how with my limited AutoCAD knowledge.

Saying that I think it looks quite nice in red with black t-moulding, what do you think?

The marquee looks awesome, but I think the kickplate and CP Overlay are just a bit too "busy".  My eyes just seem to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff on there.  Not sure how it could be "less busy", but perhaps just cut back on the number of comic strip cells there and perhaps have them fade in and out of a solid background color?

As you guys know life gets in the way of your dreams..... and so does WORK!

Will have them on tonight as I will be leaving on time today!

I'm thinking about side art but not to sure. I know that it would probably set it off better. I would need to cut it to the shape of the sides. If I got it printed at mamemarquees and cut it to shape would it affect the laminate on it? Or would you get it printed normally and somehow protect it? What would you do?

Looks like some people are having problems with the files.

I will re-post again tonight but in photoshop. That should sort out the problems!

Alternatively, is there a way I could embed the background comic images into the ai file so I don't have to send the background comic files too?

As you guys know life gets in the way of your dreams..... and so does WORK!

Will have them on tonight as I will be leaving on time today!

I'm thinking about side art but not to sure. I know that it would probably set it off better. I would need to cut it to the shape of the sides. If I got it printed at mamemarquees and cut it to shape would it affect the laminate on it? Or would you get it printed normally and somehow protect it? What would you do?

Just bumping about sideart. Is it OK to cut to shape of arcade or will it ruin it?

If you drew it the shape you needed wouldn't mamemarquees print it out  that same shape?

Well, the centre top (admin part) is a spinner using a TT2.

The 2 on each top side (next to coin/start) are going to be the buttons for the trackball/spinner and will have button labels directly on the button using vinyl thanks to Pongo!

The other buttons are (obviously) the player buttons! lol.

so, the spot next to both start buttons are for the spinner and trackball.

The spot between the volume and the exit is for the spinner.

How about the spot to the right of the volume?

Never mind.  I was looking at an older version of your panel.

Don't you think while you are using the spinner you may hit the exit by accident?

what games do you like that you need a spinner.  I didn't put a spinner on my panel, because for me there are only a couple of games that are worth it.

so,
the pause is the "P" button on keyboard
exit is the "END" button on keyboard
volume is the "~" button on keyboard
the list button, is that to get to the list of emulators?  If it is i think thats the "HOME" button or is it to toggle the
game lists that you create. (eg.  favorites, shooters...ect)?

these mappings are for maximus.

It is to toggle the list i.e. favs, shooters, etc. But if i choose i can also have it as a shift to enable the other buttons for a second use!

I put the spinner in just in case. I feel its better to have than to not have it.

are you going to have any other emulators?  If so then you need the "HOME" on the keyboard to go back to the emulator choice menu.

i guess im confused.

in maximus, if you were playing a mame game.  to quit the game you would press "END" on the keyboard.

this will take you back to the screen that list of all games in mame.

now, from that screen. if you want to use a different emulator, you would press the "HOME" on the keyboard.

this would take you to the screen that list all of emulators.

so it seems to me you just have one of those keys, don't you need both?

not if you assign the keys you don't.

I have assigned it so that that esc exits to home and exits a game.

Well, I think I managed to solve the issue with the files not being embedded!

Will upload and see if it works!

Am also trying to export to Photoshop but not having much luck as it keeps saying that file can't be saved.

Worst case I will upload all the attached files to the ai.

Ok, quick update.

Beanboy has been doing an awesome job on the vid! It is coming along nicely! Props to you.

Have been chatting with Franco (yes the metal master) and have come up with a few extra ideas so props to you too!

I am still working on the skin (I have had requests for that too). As soon as it is ready I will post that up too!

In the meantime I have decided to go for U360s and illuminated buttons to match my illuminated Happ trackball! Why you ask? Well, if you are gonna do this then you have to do it properly!

Will hopefully get cutting soon as soon as the plans are finalised and it stops flipping raining over here!

I vectorised decent ones.

I am really looking for a decent size picture of Wolverine, Thing or Captain America and Green Goblin, Apocalypse, Carnage or Kingpin to keep the good vs evil theme on the cab.

Also, if you go on the marvel site, you can watch hi res videos of the latest animations. If I could download these I would use them as intro videos for my arcade, but I cant download them!

Would be awesome to have the random videos at startup!

Cheers bud!!!

The sideart will cost around $200 so approx £110 :dizzy:

It is a lot to pay but it will look unique!

Also, got a quote from Brent Plastics for the formica:

2 – 3050 x 1220  0.8mm (nom)  Formica 2253 Diamond black – velour finish

Price  @  £47.59 each + VAT, Delivery to London  @  £30.00 + VAT

Seems a bit steep! Your guy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper! :hissy:

Also, need to chat to you about that little thing we talked about ;) don't want to give too much away!

Did you ever decide who to pick for your 3rd character for the marquee? My personal thought is Wolverine.

Otherwise, cab looks super cool - can't wait to see what it looks like as it's going up!

My cab plans have been put on indefinite hold -- I had the time, the space, and even a cab I was going to use, but suddenly I had to move and into a smaller home so the space that wasn't a problem now *is* a problem. :-(

Yeah, check the first post. I went with Spidey, Hulk and Iron Man.

I am still thinking about putting Wolverine on the side but can't get a decent looking decent size pic of him!

Made a couple of amendments to the intro for you ......

"MARVEL" logo more like the real thing, and ended clip with Wolverine slashing screen and sound effect to go with it.

I just need the font from the "ARCADE" part of your logo.

Here's a preview ....

I hope you like it, been working on it for a couple of hours today for you.         :dizzy:

I used a program called "Memories on TV" which is a slideshow dvd creator program (just output to video file rather than dvd).

I grabbed a load of comic screen shots from the Marvel website, pasted them into a paint program and trimmed them.  Then I imported them into M.o.TV and imported some music.  Set up for each slide to display for 0.1 seconds each and have a page flip transition between slides.  Set the background to the red colour and had the slides fade out toward the end to show the red.  Text overlay effects were added and the Wolverine screen slashes were created by nabbing the "slashes" off the new Wolverine poster and tracing them in black.  It was then dropped at the end of the slideshow with a transition of rotate pan and zoom to give the effect of zooming into the black slash area.

It costs an absolute fortune for some of the video editing software suites, and just goes to show that with a little bit of imagination and steering in the right direction with a solid theme - you can get good results for very little outlay or artistic talent.

The artwork is currently being tweaked. There is some small stuff to do on it before I get it printed but it isn't far away.

As for the bezel I am having a small problem with the measurements (see attached pic).

I need to get the measurements right for this part. As you can see the inside bezel section will sit inside the side section. Effectively the side will go up at 20 degrees and the monitor will sit at 30 degrees.

This means that with my calculations the speaker section will sit at 45 degrees meaning the sound will directly “face” the player. The other section is the bit that sits below the marquee.

In this case the angles are key as well as the 682.8mm height (or 683mm to make it easier. The speaker section does not really need to be 130mm but it should be the minimum if possible to accommodate 4” speakers.

Could anyone draw this up in Autocad and give me the correct dimensions?

Hopefully when this is fully completed I can get some help drawing this up (or doing a render) in Sketch up to see how the cabinet looks as I have no clue when it comes to using it!!!

Also, Franco has very kindly helped with creating the dimensions for the cab. They are also attached. Thanks again Franco!!!

Ahh, well it is a 19" (483mm) lcd monitor (not wide screen). The actual dimesions are 422mm (W) x 412mm (H) x 200mm (D). Its an AG Neovo F-419B. Approximately the screen part should be 342mm (H).

Is this relevant though? I need the lengths of the inside parts. The monitor will definitely fit the bezel, I just need to know the lengths the pieces should be according to those angles.

OK, this is what I have got in terms of artwork (excluding the speakers, kickplate, keyboard tray and admin panel).

I made a few tweaks to the sideart, and I decided to create an admin panel that will house all the admin stuff (power, volume, pause, exit, reset) and move it of the CP. I also moved the spinner of centre to make it easier for aggressive trackball use.

Let me know what you think because if everyone is happy this is getting printed!

What about grey-scaling the backgrounds on the sideart (not the large main characters)?  Have you tried this to see how that would look?

yeah - definitely full color for the marquee.  Also, that's a lot of gray on the CP - what would it look like if you had some of the characters in color?  Maybe the heroes and villains but nothing else... it would tie into the side panels a little better I think...

They are all illuminated. They are clear Happs, but illuminated Red with an illuminated red Happ trackball.

The coin, p1, p2 and mouse buttons will have PGI inserts in them too.

I know the marquee doesn't go, but I couldn't have a colour one and then a different scheme everywhere else. So here is a redesign.

What do you think?

I liked the full color one way better.  I think you can get away with it on the marquee because it is actually lit up.  Plus, it has more  characters from the Marvel universe (not just Spider-man related)...

Yeah the measurements are basically sorted now (will post them up tonight!).

As for the artwork it is difficult. I really like the grayscale sides, just not everything else.

I did a small printout of both and showed my family. Votes were: 8 for colour, 1 for Grayscale. They said that the colour looked more fun and attractive although they all agreed that the characters really pop on the side art for the greyscale! But overall they said the colour one has a comic feel and looks not so bland.

I don't want to spend $280 on a mistake, if you get my drift!

I am also doing a small revision to the marquee!

Well as i stated to ThatItalian, i am about 99% done with my arcade.  My kids loved the theme that you created so i desided to use it.  All i had to do to the control panel artwork was move the controls around a little and add add some buttons.  I still have to instal the volume control and wire up the coin door lights.  Once again you sharing your artwork made this possible.

Thank you

AWESOME BUD! Glad this is being put to good use!!!

Just out of curiosity, what size is your trackball and did you move the button spacing as Franco suggested?

How did you print the CP?

Did you make any other changes?

What do you think are the flaws in the CP?

 :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

This has just increased my motivation by 200%!!!

Well, the button spacing is pretty much the same as Thatitalians.  I think its fine and my kids 7 and 8  seem to have no problems.  But if you notice i moved all p1 and p2 buttons down a little.  on your cp the left and right arrows of the joystick and the trackball are at the same level.  on mine they are an inch or so apart.  the track ball is a 3" U-Trak from Ultimarc.   I just printed the artwork on a plotter here at work and put it under plexi glass.  nothing too special about it.  if you want i can post my cp artwork and you can over lay it on yours to see the button changes.  and lastly i am using maximus as a fe with a 27" tv.

Yeah that would be great to see the comparison!

A 3" trackball? That is a worry as the red circle is supposed to be 3" exactly but there is a red ring around your trackball. Did you edit the red circle? (it was supposed to be just a placement to see how the trackball would look)

Just thought I would let everyone know also you get an 11% discount at mame marquees! Will be ordering this within the month!

here at work i have a color plotter.  so, the cp and the marquee is printed on regular paper and sandwiched between plexi glass.  and remember, all the changes i did were from your original design at the start of the thread.  not the one you have towards the end of the thread.  I also added a pinball plunger.

Your artwork skills are impressive - look forward to seeing your finished product with the sideart. You took the exact opposite approach as me - I built cab first, artwork last (what I'm doing now). I think your way is more fun :)

I have to say I love the artwork.  I am a huge marvel fan, I even have a Spiderman tattoo and Wolverine tattoo.

My favorite is the Wolverine color with the gray background.

I love the artwork!  I think the latest side artwork looks fantastic.  I also agree with the color background.  I believe it makes the comics look more authentic.  The large character takes up most of the side so I don't think it looks to busy.

Great Job!

the idea is good as for the mixing of different ages of comics it just does not appeal to me if you did a character comparison IE old to new it looks better but I would stick with one age eliminates the inconsistencies of the artwork also a small note certain art does not mix even if its drawn in the same age for example frank miller love his artwork but it stands on its own well gl with your project and i hope I was not to critical just trying to offer a different opinion

I came across this thread when I first starting looking into making my own arcade setup. I was a huge marvel fan growing up and I decided to make my arcade cabinet have a Marvel theme. I have the control panel almost done, now I'm just working on the marquee. I used a poster I had laminated for the CP. When I redo do it (it's only a matter of time because I'm always redoing things to make them better) I'm not going to use laminate because it peeled a little around the holes I made for the buttons. It's not too noticeable but it bothers me because I know it's there.

Well some progress:

I got some full size printouts of the sideart and CP and cutting plans for both (see attached). Now I can use these as a template for cutting to make sure the art fits perfectly when I fit it.

I also tried out my router today. It started badly but after some advice (thanks Franco!) it now has become my new best friend. Why on earth did I not buy one 2 years ago???

Now here is the bad news. I have been seconded on a project for work (yay!) for 3 months! (booooo). I go in February which means cab cutting won't start until May! At least it will be sunny, warm and dry! However, to make up I will be starting up another project parallel to the arcade..... yes you guessed..... a juke!

Stay tuned.....

beanboy33 the cab that you have is the exact size that I have been looking for (other then a few CP layout changes).  Any chance you have plans that you are willing to share?  What size monitor do you have in there I saw that thatitalian was going to use a 19" LCD screen and I have a 20" so if yours is around the same...

I have a 27" Tv connected via s-video.    I think if you used my plans it might be a little too big for your 20".  let me know.

On a different note. ThatItalian are you going to post your maximus arecade files?

Yeah I think it may get lost in there.  I may end up hitting some pawn shops once all TVs need to go digital, hoping people will get rid of their old TVs.  So if you are willing to share I'll definitely look at them.  My problem is I need a bigger CP since I am going 7 buttons and a track ball.  I don't do wood working but my father-in-law said he would help but needs to see plans with measurements.  And I thought the 20" monitor was a good size... :'(

Might have to wait to see what ThatItalian's looks like since he is going 19" on the monitor.  Let's all Cheer ThatItalian on to get his going.  :applaud:  :applaud:

Thanks.

Very nice, although I have a suggestion.  On the main emulator screen, they look a little hard to see and read.  Can you maybe shade or lighten the background to allow the picture and name of the emulator to stand out more?

Also where are you using the arcade-ya font?

Yes, I was hoping to add a border around each of the titles so that it is easier to read (like the emulator selection menu), but I didn't get round to it. I know it is difficult to read but I did it just to show the skin. I will add this to my list of changes and re-upload the skin here and upload to the MA website. Thanks for the input though!

I am using the arcade font on my CP, however this has just been replaced with the comic font as it fits in more with the theme. Sorry i haven't got a pic of it yet but I will add one tomorrow or late tonight!

I must say, this cab has turned out to be a phenomenal project and a pleasure to watch take shape. Very nice work indeed.

I do have one tiny suggestion perhaps:

I would change the "let's go crazy" screen to something cliche Marvelish, like...."It's Clobberin' Time!", "Spidey Sense Tingling", or "X-Men Assemble"

I think it is a genuine work of art...If you take it for what it is based on...comics, the color/busy look fits incredibly well.

I think it is a piece that Stan Lee himself would love. Great work!...I am enjoying watching this thread.

Well, here are the long awaited greyscale models. I think a vast improvement on the colour ones.

Please ignore the screen, it needs to be replaced, and the joys have red ball tops but you get the drift.

The white part of the coin door art is where the coin door will sit.

Greyscale is the way to go and I'd even go as far as to say that the frontend should be greyscale as well.

It isn't actually an instruction card, it is the admin buttons. Centre button is power, the other 4 are pause, exit, volume and brightness.

The FE will be completely overhauled if I go down the greyscale route (which looks quite likely) in order to match the art, I just didn't include it.

I like the second pic but without the coindoor artwork The admin artwork and the speakers are nice.
The best thing in the hole artwork is the side-artwork. Wolverine and Doom are really awosome.
