Mario Brothers Widebody Restoration
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:43:01 am »
Finally had some time to fix up my Mario Bros.

I'd previously sanded/filled and repainted the black front, cleaned and repainted the coin doors. I'd also cleaned the joysticks, installed a new CP overlay and Mike's Arcade repro buttons (I'll buy good condition originals in the future I think. Not real happy with the so-called repros).

I prepared the cabinet by stripping it, sanding the sides, filling holes/broken corners, and respraying the inside edges black. This week I had a chance to actually install the laminate. I used Wilsonart brand "Citrus Orange" in vertical grade. The color is slightly darker than the original color, but extremely close to my Donkey Kong Junior's original color (my MB was noticably lighter in color for some reason - fade?).  Not sure how much this will bother me yet.

Finally, I installed the laminate and the sideart. I polished the marquee/bezel, sanded and repainted the marquee brackets and reinstalled both, and installed plastic slide feet on the bottom.  Installed the T-molding. I will probably repaint the back, top, and backdoor later.

I'm happy to report that two 4x8 sheets is more than enough to laminate an entire Donkey Kong Junior (including the front), for those interested. It costs more than paint, but the finished product is very durable and very "perfect" as far as a smooth finish is concerned. I used it in this case mostly because I didn't want to spend the time sanding and painting.

Of course, I'm sure what everyone really wants are pics.

Yup, I saw this one on the KLOV forum. I really like the idea of putting brand new laminate (formica) on it.

I've ordered 5 samples with Formica of red colors that match "closely" to the red of the Radar Scope cabinet.

I hope they deliver samples to private persons too.....

Thanks for the kind words guys! :) I'll try to attach the pictures so that way they will be in the forum here regardless of what happens to that website down the road.  I'll also try to get some better pictures of it, since it's kinda hard to see the front of the game in those pics.
