It would be pretty hard for them not to consider it successful when it made at least 10 million more then their expectations and is the second biggest opening ever (for non-sequels).  If a sequel isn't made, then it will be because of script, cast or crew problems, but they'll probably be throwing around enough money to make sure any potential problem goes away.

I think Iron Man 2 was a near certainty even prior to this weekend's boxoffice numbers.

Don't believe me?

Marvel Press release says:
Iron Man 2, on April 30, 2010
Thor on June 4, 2010
And,
Marvel is planting its feature film stakes for summer 2011 with an Avengers-themed summer - a two-picture project which will debut on May 6, 2011 with The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July 2011.

Of the lot, Thor strikes me as the one most likely to fizzle. Just based on potential appeal of the characters. :dunno

i don't believe you.  Something must be up since you are on the internet and using facts to prove something.

Seriously though another iron man would be nice.

Your heart is in the right place, but your analysis is severely flawed.  The numbers guarantee that another Iron Man will be made.  This is a PERFECT example of the upper echelons of business doing things wrong, not the other way around.  Every time something great comes out, the upper echelons of business go into immediate Xerox mode.  They say, "Good god!  Look at those numbers.  Get five sequels in production IMMEDIATELY!"  And we end up with Joel Shumacher Batmans and Bret Ratner X-men.

It is the fact that the upper echelons of business often seem unable to do things right that GUARANTEES that Iron Man 2 will be made, regardless of whether the director is ready to do a sequel, regardless of whether a decent script has been made, etc.  The movie will be made, and it will be released on time.  Period.
