Tile Floor - Space Invader, Pics
« on: July 07, 2008, 10:37:55 pm »
My wife and I recently moved into a new house and I had the inclination / burden, to tile a portion of the basement as a game room.  The tile was left over from the previous owners and they never got around to using it.  While I had the opportunity, I figured I'd make something cool at the entrance:    ;D

Nice. That basement looks like it might make a nice little game room.

OMG, I just suggested this exact thing to my wife while we were wandering around Lowes looking at tiles, etc.

And it WAS a good idea, I knew it! Looks really great, congrats man.

Thanks all!   I sent it to Mitch and it is currently a news item in the July 2008 issue of GameRoom Magazine.

I did think about an entire floor Galaga scene with attacking ships, missles and explosions, but that would have been way much, too busy, etc.   A mosaic at the bottom of a pool like that would be cool.

I had thoughts of doing that, but with a Tetris style.
Would be real easy making those shapes...

This reminds me of some freeware application I saw a long time back and wish I'd bookmarked - it takes an image, hand drawing, whatever... and you pick the tile size (1"x1", 4"x4", etc.) and it converts to a template for you to layout the picture using tiles.  Argh... it would be so easy to take a screenshot of Galaga or other, remove the black background using a graphics program and convert the remaining image to a tile template.

I'll do some digging and see if I can find it again. (I found it originally because I was looking for tile templates for a back patio area.)

If you Photoshop has a tile function too. You can use that to turn a photo into a tile floor.

But then, Why would you need special software for something like a Galaga screenshot? That's a low resolution low color image.

It would still be difficult to do a Galaga screen capture on a tile floor unless you used a very small tile size - even then, doing it without some sort of layout template would be very difficult I think.

Very nice; I have a Pac-Man themed floor with a pair of Cherries about to be eaten.

Unfortunately, my games room (or garage) wasn't quite big enough and it's covered with game room stuff and doesn't quite fit pattern-wise but I think it looks OK. If I do it again, I'd use smaller tiles like your image. Lots of hassle in that though... :dunno
