| z38gm:
I was just thinking about layout questions. How far apart is typical for placement of buttons? It looks like 1/2"-3/4" seems typical to me, but it is hard to tell from pictures alone. Also, I was planning on putting the spinner and trackball centered between the two joysticks, with the trackball closer to the player and the spinner up above slightly offset. This would pretty much remove comfortable reach to buttons when needed so I was thinking are there any real advantages to having 8 buttons per player as opposed to 6? I can't remember, off hand any games that use 8. Instead I was contemplating just placing those four extra buttons to the side of the trackball/spinner...I guess I could always just add another four buttons in this spot and give 8 to each player, but want to see if there is a real point or not. Thanks for all the help so far. I am getting more ready to purchase, but still want to be 100% sure of everything before I pull the trigger :). |

The space you measure for button placement is from the center. Mine are 1 1/2" apart. It varies from person to person. I have 7 buttons myself, wired as 6 (the four button is wired twice). This is just a preference of mine and is in no way the norm. 8 buttons are really only needed for console emulation, but that's up to you and what you plan on playing. Check the Control Panel thread for examples as far as spinner / trackball placement http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=59359.0 |

Hey good to see you z38gm! Lottsa good people here. Another great tip I see recommended here and one I'll be doing for my main cp is to first lay it all out in cardboard. What looks good on paper may not feel right or comfortable when actually used. This way you can test a couple of layouts and which ever one you like the best you can use as a template. |

^Yes, this can't be stressed enough. Draw your layout on cardboard and actually install everything in it. Great way to see how well your setup works. Also, have someone stand next to you so you can judge whether there's enough room for other players. |

A mini pac will provide you with all the options you first described. Get the proper harness if you are not into DIY cables. |
