IPAC Shift Keys

I understand that the IPAC allows shift keys--using the button designated as "shift" (P1 start is the default shift key, if I recall properly), then pressing another, a second set of keypresses can be emulated. This is used, for instance, to trigger "P" or "esc".
If I were to have a separate "Pause" button on my CP, could I wire that button to both of the appropriate inputs at the same time, thus *simulating* a shift-key sequence? Or is the IPAC sharp enough to know it needs first the shiftkey then the selection?
It seems this would be nifty, so that I could avoid having to reprogram the IPAC or buy a second encoder if I wired up the first one...
Thanks!

Re programming is super easy.
You could just wire into one of your left over inputs on the ipac and assign that to pause in mame too.
