price gouging rant
SithMaster:
Im surprised no one has mentioned the price of crude oil per barrel.

Granted, I don't spend a lot of time in line at soup kitchens, but what exactly do the girl scouts do?
Couple of weeks ago, some smart aleck boy scout was hustling popcorn on me for $10/box. Right outside of a grocery store.... where the same thing was available inside for $4..... at least the girl scouts have something unique! :dizzy:

Girl scouts come out once a year to hawk their cookies. Maybe they should start selling homemade cookies. You know get some practice now for later.
Was the popcorn microwavable or was it already popped?
shmokes you posted just before i was going to which is good because i can comment now on something. Since the girl scouts dont make the cookies (duh) then the company that does would just sell it to the stores without going through the kids. I never bought the cookies they sell from them so im not sure who makes them but id imagine they are available in supermarkets under one name or another.
Jdurg:
Damn. That other company should go and sell the cookies as their own product via retail. I'd buy the Samoan cookies by the case! (Then be a guest on the Learning Channel's 'fat-ass can't move cuz he weighs 1000 pounds' show. :P )
I'm actually quite fond of a non-girl-scout cookie. Belgian almond wafers made from simply sugar, butter, and ground up almond paste. When fresh, they are incredible!

I would assume they already do sell them via retail. Unless selling them once a year is too lucrative to pass up on.

Deconstructing The Girl Scout Cookie
SavannahLion:
From what I understand. The Girl Scout cookie recipes enjoy an exclusivity clause. No one else can sell the same cookie nor can the same company sell that same cookie under a different brand. Yeah, there are similar cookies available, but compare the ingredient lists, it's not the same cookie. The exclusivity clause kicked in this year when the Girl Scouts switched bakeries. I haven't had a chance to compare with last years stash to verify the ingredient list to see if all the cookies remained the same.
Did anyone notice the GS didn't have Samoas this year? Yeah, apparently someone screwed up somewhere and the GS lost the name when switching bakeries. Now Samoas are called Caramel Delights. The GS may not bake the cookies themselves, but they apparently (try to) keep control over their IP rights.
You can get GS cookies year around... sort of. Dreyers ice cream often sells GS cookie laced ice cream for several months before and after the GS do their yearly run. It would appear that Dreyers didn't get the Samoas memo since they still sold the Samoas ice cream this year.
By the way, $4 a box is price gouging. The boxes were sold for $3.50 this year. That GS troop probably did that because they get so little money per box as it is anyways.
