My civic is a '99 and I'm still waiting on whatever the meltdown is.

How comfortable is the Civic to you?
I found a 1998 2dr 5spd Civic with 110k miles for $4995. I will test drive it this weekend.

My roomate in college had a Civic around that area and I drove it briefly twice. His was souped up though, so I don't really know what a stock one drives like. It gets 29/37 gas mileage though, so this one is high on my radar.

My wife had a stock '99.  Pretty comfortable, great gas mileage as you mentioned.  Also, enough power to maneuver in traffic easily.

I'm 5-10 220 and it is just fine room-wise.  I would definitely recommend the 4 door, though.  I sure wouldn't want to be dealing with a carseat in a 2 door civic.  I had them in my 4 door and it was no problem at all.  I don't think the standard drives much differently than the automatic.  Mine is auto, decent kick for a 1.6l 4cyl, with some upside if you want to rice it a little bit.

The new model has only gotten the choice of a 1.4l or 1.8l. I thought that was pretty lame. 1.4l is really not enough and 1.8l is a bit more than you really need so you waste fuel.
