Which 4-way?

Hi everyone!  Great site!  GREAT forum!

I'm just starting out on the MAME maze...I'm really wondering what everyone is using for a 4-way joystick and how you like it, and what you would recommend.

I spend most of my mametime playing the early eighties games, so this is one area I want to do right.

I see my options as being something like this:

a) a happ four-way ultimate
b) a happ competition with Oscar restrictor plates
c) ms pacman/galaga ball stick (I realize I'll need Oscar's mounting plate to put this on a wood cp)
d) videoconnection claims to have some wico 4-ways in both microswitch AND leaf switch (they also say they have some 8-way leafs)

It appears that the first way is cheapest, though that is of lesser concern for me.  The other 3 weigh in at approximately equal.

Thanks!

The only options you will really be happy with are C and D. Options A and B have too long of a throw and feel all wrong, specifically for Pac-Man.

I would go with a Reunion stick or one of the Wico Leaf sticks. (Heck, I would get ALL Wico leaf sticks if I were you).

go with the ultimarc t-sitck or j-stcik. they are the best, get a few of them, they double as 8-way and restricted 4-way joysticks. no need for a dedicated. they are pricey, but weel worth it. if you don't go ultimarc, go ms. pac reunion, like paigeoliver said

Sounds like good advice!

Maybe a question I forgot to ask: Will I be able to mount the Wicos in wood, or will I need an installation plate?  If I do, will Oscar's work?

Thanks again.

Normal Wico leaf sticks will mount in wood, but they are way too short when done that way. I would use a mounting plate.

Some of them have longer handles than others and don't need mounting plates, but most of the ones I have seen are short.
