i use a original xbox controller.  the Dpad is much better than the 360's and you can make your own usb adapter pretty easily.   I added two xbox controller ports to my cabinet for when i need to lay 4 player games.  they seem to be better than any pc gamepads I have ever used.

While it's not exactly a Nintendo D-pad since only Nintendo has the rights to the original four way d-pad, this controller does a pretty good job of copying it. It's not perfect but comes pretty damn close. So I use this gamepad for my emulator gameplay. You can also get a Logitech Dual Shock with the two analog controls. Works pretty well also. But there are like three versions of it. Just make sure you get the one that has a d-pad similar to the one below otherwise the d-pad control will be horrible.

I've got a couple of these as well and have recommended them to others that are just starting out with emulation.  They are a really great option for the PC and as I recall can be had at Target for $10.

I think the wii remote is the answer to all of our problems, with lightguns, and wireless controllers, but I haven't spent much time with it yet, other then to control my cab using it as a very accurate mouse.

I bought two Topgun light guns, and was extremely disappointed....  Thats when I started looking at using my wii remote instead.

I did see somewhere that someone had a glovepie script for the classic pad using a wii remote on the pc.

Currently I use two wireless Playstation 2 controllers from walmart and a playstation 2 usb adapter that I bought for my dance pads.

About the USB Precision Gamepad - I just bought 2 of them to try hacking to make a 'Street Fighter II' arcade stick.  Anybody have information on these gamepad specs or have experience with them?  Can they handle all 10 buttons + 2 directions at once?  Is the response time on par with IPAC2 or GP-Wiz MAX 32?  Do they use full speed USB or low speed?  Thought it might be slightly better cost ($20 for 2) but if its too much work will just take them back and opt for that which works.

Does anybody know of a gamepad test program, one that is able to detect button response time or USB controller information (speed) or both?

Tried customer support but they are no help.

If anybody finds a site with help for hacking this controller or tech specs it would be greatly appreciated.  If I decide to go through with the hack I would post my 'findings' of course.

Thanks all - GAMES ROCK!!

I did a hack with one of these controllers. See this thread...

What I learned from hacking this controller was that it doesn't share the same common ground like most controllers. Or maybe it does, and I just didn't try it. Basically, the d-pad had a common ground but it was separated from the ground of the regular buttons. And the shoulder buttons also had its own ground circuit separate from the ground of the other circuits. Who knows maybe the ground does work for all buttons, but I just didn't try it. It had four different grounds from what I'm recalling and seeing on the pictures.
