Hi

Finally got around to announcing the start of this project (Well I have actually been planning this for quite a while).

A quick rundown of the components i will be using:

Interface: MiniPack (Ultimarc)
Buttons: Regulars with microswitch (Ultimarc)
Trackball: 3" highlip (Happ)
Joysticks: J-stick (Ultimarc)
Monitor: De cased 27" TV (Sony)
Monitor bezel: 27" (Happ)
Coin door + mech.: Happ over under
Speakers: 4" (Happ)
Amplifier: Gutted from Logitech speakers
Marquee lighting: NovaMatrix (Groovy GameGear)
Computer:  1,7 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM (leftover from work)

The colours in the pictures are just the ones i used in the CAD system. In real life it will most likely be painted all black with black or yellow T-moulding + fullsized sideart (based on the original Simpsons sideart). The CPO + marquee will be custom made (Simpsons themed of course).

The cabinet will be build from scratch using 19 mm and 12 mm MDF.

The model is modeled in 3D using SolidWorks 2007. Everything (3D CAD files, 2D drawings, sideart, marquee, CPO...) will of course be made available to this wonderfull forum ;D. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Any kind of feedback, critique or comments are welcome (I haven't started cutting wood yet :)).

I'll update this post as often as i can.

This will probably be a slow build, so please be patient.

Update START

Well i finally got around to compiling a collection of project related files that i created for this build:

PDF containing the plans:

http://rapidshare.com/files/367256329/Arcade_Antics_Plans.zip

Complete artwork package (AI files):

http://rapidshare.com/files/367256326/Arcade_Antics_Artwork.zip

Native 3D CAD files (SolidWorks 2009):

http://rapidshare.com/files/367256328/Arcade_Antics_SolidWorks.zip

Generic 3D CAD files (STEP 214):

http://rapidshare.com/files/367256334/Arcade_Antics_STEP.zip

Interactive 3D CAD (eDrawing, no CAD software needed):

http://rapidshare.com/files/367256332/Arcade_Antics_eDrawing.zip

Let me know if there's any questions regarding the files.

Happy building  ;D

Update END

Good luck with your cab. The only criticism I have at this point is that it looks like your marquee area sticks way out. Maybe add a larger radius to the top curve, or shorten the one on the bottom? Other than that, looking good.

Here's an idea of what I mean.

I love the Simpsons so I am totally with you on this one. I converted a machine into a Simpsons themed MAME.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=67482

I have a Simpsons Merchandising CD (which is what Fox sends out to the Licensed Merchandisers) with lots of Illustrator and EPS files with Simpsons characters and stuff, so when you're ready to design your Marquee, Side art and CPO let me know if you want the files.

Good luck, I'll be following this build.

Hi

NICE, I would love to have those files! How do I go about getting those?

You can see my preliminary work on the CPO and the marquee below.

Note on the CPO: I'm considering using the trackball as one of Homers eyes (or would that just be weird?).

It might look weird to have the trackball as one of his eyes, but it would definately be unique.

I'll upload the files somewhere for you to download them. They shouldn't be too big.

I think its a great idea! Even paint an eyeball on the track ball - would be cool.

The only reservation I would have about that is the position of everything else in relation to it (sticks, buttons)

Good luck with it ....

Yes that could be problem. I would probably keep everything (trackball, button...) where it is now and simply reposition the artwork.

Heres a thought - make the trackball the center of this:

Glad to find this today as I just finished installing Mame and GameEx on the computer I am planning on using in a Simpsons theme arcade cabinet.  I haven't decided if I am going with an upright or a cocktail yet.  I'll be watching this project closely as I work on my machine.

BradC - would it be possible to get a copy of the graphics from the Simpsons Merchandising CD you have?  It would really help with the control panel and side art as graphics is one of my weakest areas.

Well that's it for now.

Small status:

All the wood has been cut, including the control panel (pics of CP will follow), and the cabinet has been built.

Next up, sanding, priming, painting. . . . .

I'll post more pics as soon as I can.

Loving this! I eventually want to build a Simpson's themed bartop for my brother as he an addict!

The great thing is the amount of resources available such as artwork, themes, icons, sounds, etc. You could even do a Simpson's intro (when the all get to the couch) as the startup video for your cab!!!

Get like 20-30 different ones from a DVD and the frontend can randomise the intro so every time you start up it is different video playing! Well that was my idea for the bartop at least! Now that would look awesome!

Now that doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

I will definitely consider this!

what did you use to mount the joystick plates with? Just curious because I'm trying to find something thats a little easier to make flush than bolts.

i like the idea of the trackball for the eye, there must be a good image of homer with a big swollen bloodshot eye after being hit with something, i'm sure i can picture having seen it in an episode.
got COLOR codes from projects, post them here

I simply took and countersunk the holes in the joystick mounting plate. I then used screws (ISO 10642 M5x25) + nuts to secure the mounting plate.

I have attached a picture of the screws i used.

If the above doesn't make sense, i'll post a couple of pics.

Hi

Yes of course, that has been my intention since the beginning of the project. There will be a complete package (3D CAD + drawing and artwork) but i am kind of short on time at the moment  :). We are in the middle of selling / buying houses and we have a new baby coming in 1½ month so i got my hands full at the moment.

I'll post some CAD files as soon as i can.
