Macs are superior!

Nah, the virus writers just figure the Mac users have suffered enough already.

--- Quote from: koolmoecraig on February 23, 2008, 02:07:09 pm ---A computer should serve you, not the other way around.  It's no badge of honor to have to constantly patch, update, virus scan, registry scan and every other scan.  Screw that.

--- End quote ---

Yeah!  Screw cars.  Screw homes.  Screw bikes!  Screw your pinball machines.  Screw anything that requires maintenance!

I think I'll do that.  I can live spending my days with a racquetball and a pencil.

--- End quote ---

Yeah those cars that required constant maintenance are the reason why the auto industry in this country is on the verge of imploding.  We had our asses handed to us by Japanese.  Why?  Because their cars WORKED without constantly having crap break down on them.  The sole reason American cars are better today is because of the Japanese auto invasion. Period.  If they weren't forced to improve quality to compete they would still be pieces of crap or they'd be out of business. Toyota is about to surpass GM as the #1 automaker in the world. At last check GM was only ahead by 10,000 units.  Can you say fleet sales anyone?  Oh how the mighty have fallen.

You are going to compare houses, pinball machines and bikes to a computer? Give me a break man.  Of course anything with mechanical moving parts is going to need maintenance of some sort.  I'm not talking about the moving parts in it.  In talking about computers I am talking about the software, drivers, etc. When was the last time that you had to lube your hard drive like a bike chain??? Lame argument.

How many electronic parts are on a bike?  What fails 99% of the time on a pinball machine?  The mechanical switches and coils.  The moving parts.  The electronic parts rarely fail unless they are poorly designed or they are overloaded by a failed MECHANICAL component or switch.

As for houses, once again when something electronic fails its usually because of poor construction or engineering.  If you kept blowing fuses in your house would you chalk up rewiring the house to maintenance?  No, you would figure out what was WRONG, fix it and be done with.  Most problems that arise with houses are not electrical. Plumbing? Painting?  Roofing? Flooring?  This is such a stupid argument as they are not even remotely related.

Of course Macs have problems buts FAR less often than PCs.  That point can't even be argued.  Whether it's because there are far less Macs out there or what doesn't matter.  I'm simply stating a fact.  If Macs made up a majority of the computer market then yes there might be more problems with them due to more viruses but as of now it's not the case.

You say that Mac users don't know how computers work but PC users do? You think the average PC user knows how PCs work? Pfffff. You think the average PC user "constantly patches, updates, scans, deletes unused temp files and defrags" their computer? Yeah right.  Besides, why should they have to?  Also, where do you think a MAJORITY of these Mac users came from?  Most of them weren't born using Macs.  They converted because they obviously had a dislike of their PC.  I would love love love love to see some numbers of people who quit using Macs in order to switch to PCs. HA!

Back to the lame argument for a second...Does the average person know HOW cars work nowadays?  No they do not.  They take them to mechanics to do most of the work and if they had to do that often nobody would buy those cars.  They'd buy a car that didn't require constant maintenance.

I think the reason that you have less problems with Mac is because of the fact that they use standardized components. Of course this allows Apple to effectively control their prices.

The ultimate goal for any product whether it be mechanical, electrical, electronic whatever is to be as MAINTENANCE FREE as possible. This leads to more sales, happy customers, higher profits.  Whether you know how to work on something does not make that something better.  The goal is to never have to.

Also of note: Article #457 of the BYOAC message boards clearly states: "If you are going to respond to any post by KoolMoeCraig, you are required to reference asterisks and/or comedy in addition to the the word "funny".  If and when possible, try to incorporate all three for maximum comedic effect.  Ending your response with an image of Donkey Kong rolling his eyes is highly appreciated as well.  Contact "CheffoJeffo" if you have any questions."

Let's try to stick to that people, OK?  You guys really dropped the ball in this post.

Actually - most do now, since SP2 came out, "secure by default" is the newer configuration out of the box. Granted since I'm an IT professional, I am not average by any stretch, and most people don't do the defrag and temp file deletion, but Microsoft has made great strides to make their setup better. If you don't have anti-virus running, with current definitions you get a popup warning you. If you don't have a firewall running, you get a popup warning you. If you don't have your system patched with the latest critical updates... that's right - you get a popup warning you, and an option to click here and have them automatically installed for you.

If you go toe to toe with Mac and MS security holes - maybe you should check this out:

One of these days somebody is going to write a virus for Macs, and you guys will be caught with your pants down.

Enjoy it while it lasts...
