Why would it be impossible to update normal Blu-ray players ?
I've updated the firmware of my DVD player too...
Are Blu-ray players protected for updates ?

It wouldn't be, technically.  Practically, most people will never even understand what firmware is, nevermind that it may be upgraded.  The PS3 is a blind device in that regard - since it connects to a service it can upgrade itself.

Geez, I did some checking on updating firmware for regular players. It seems to work just fine technically, but the comments really give a glimps of the nightmare that Blu-ray really is. People are reporting disks not playing all over the place. Imagine coming home with a $35 Blu-ray disk of your favorite movie. Finally sitting down to watch it in superior HD and then the disk simply doesn't play! WTF is up with that?

To make matters worse, some comments on the firmware releases say that after they install new firmware some disks now work, but that others then stopped working.

shmokes:
Plus the BluRay spec includes features that are not currently possible on many players even if those players firmware is updatable, such as running interactive java apps in the menus that can connect to the internet and do things like pull down new movie previews rather than be stuck with the same "coming soon" previews on your disc for the next five years.

ChadTower:

Am I the only person who never uses any of the special features on a DVD?  About the most I'll ever do is watch the original trailer.  Most of the time I won't even do that.
