For me it's just a common courtesy...   If she was wanting to open a shop or bring a large new piece of furniture into the house I would expect the same.  She lives here to and we share the space.  We will discuss any big projects or larger then normal purchases.   I think with us its just a matter of finances and not that I'm not allowed to have what I want.  If we had more free cash laying around then she wouldn't question anything I did or wanted to do.

Not to mention... women do have more equal rights in the US. ;)
Neverending Project:
16 posts and only 2 gameroom pictorials? OK, I'm not one to talk, since technically I don't have a gameroom.

My cab is currently in the garage, where it will remain for a while. I do have a 3-car garage, but if I turn the single-door side into a game room I won't have a place for my workbench/tools (not to mention the gazillions of other stuff stored on shelves on that side of the garage).

I just can't wait until my boys are older. Then I can turn the playroom into a game room. Arcade machine(s), pinball(s), air hockey... Now if you will all excuse me I have to go find two or three more jobs to support my addiction.
FrizzleFried:
The 1-car side of our garage has been deemed 'MY SPACE'.  If I can fit it in there,  I can put it in there.  The wife is adamant about "NO CABS IN THE HOUSE" aside from the fact I convinced her to let me bring my Ms. Pac cocktail cab in once I get it nice looking.

As for price...frankly,  if I add in all the profit I've made from sales of machines,  parts,  etc...trades...everything...and once you consider the fact I already owned the PC's in my 3 MAME cabinets...I am probably at around only $1,500 invested or so in the whole gameroom.  That includes the carpet (free), additional electrical wiring (under $200) and insulation ($350).   Hard to argue with spending only $1.5K or so on a hobby for over a years worth of time....and once you consider the fact that I could easily recoup that $1.5K selling just two of my cabs (SW & Tempest)...I think it's a decent investment for a hobby.

ChadTower:

The whole basement in my house is 'MY SPACE'.  The first floor is 'HER SPACE'.  She never does anything with her space, though.  Literally.  The curtains from the previous owners are still there (we bought in 2001) and I pretty much had to clear out her study and paint it on my own because I was sick of looking at it and she wouldn't do it.  That extra room in 'HER SPACE' is still totally unused despite the fact that I bought and refinished matching floor to ceiling bookshelves for her, put an antique upright piano in there, repainted the room for her, and put her grandmother's 100 year old hutch in there.  She uses the room to stack crap she doesn't want to carry downstairs.

Every time we get into a discussion about what I'm doing with 'MY SPACE' I point out how woefully unused and wasted 'HER SPACE' is, how much effort *I* put into making her space what she wanted, and how she refuses to use it.

The discussion usually ends there.
