The ARK Project - Lost? Not yet!

somunny:
I managed to get one side piece completly laminated and trimmed over the weekend.  I have another piece laminated on one side waiting to be routered.  This process has been far more time consuming that I had anticipated.  I've used laminate on two other cabinets but the gold needs to be handled somewhat carefully so I'm taking it slow.

I still need to rout the t-mold slot on the laminated piece.  As soon as that is done I'll be able to remove the protective film and take some decent pics.

More progress, less pics...

I now have both of the longer side pieces completed.  Finished laminating and routing the t-mold slots this past weekend.  I also was able to get the wing pieces cut out using the template I made.

My focus now has to shift to getting the cp's put together.  I need to have them completed so I can determine the placement on the end pieces before they're laminated.  A couple of admin button holes and a hole for the control wires need to be cut out on the end pieces.  This is much easier to do when you're working with bare wood as opposed to laminated wood.

I also picked up a mobo/proc combo at Fry's last week for the Ark.  It's an Athlon X2 4200+ and an ECS GeForce 6100PM mobo.  Not exactly high performance but it will be more than enough to run what I need it to.  Both items set me back $59.  No too shabby.

Sorry for the lack of pics.  I'll take some this evening and get 'em posted.

Here's some pics:

Side 1 - This stuff is really difficult to photograph adequately.  In person, it shines very well, even through the plastic film.

Matching pair

The control panel wing pieces.  These are going to stick out too far, I think.  I plan to trim two inches off.

Found this in an email and thought of your project

Plans for the Ark of the Covenant
Exodus 25:1-22

The Ark of the Covenant

They shall make an ark of acacia wood; it shall be two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. You shall overlay it with pure gold, inside and outside you shall overlay it, and you shall make a molding of gold upon it all around. You shall cast four rings of gold for it and put them on its four feet, two rings on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side. You shall make poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, by which to carry the ark. The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. You shall put into the ark the covenant that I shall give you.

Then you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its width. You shall make two cherubim of gold; you shall make them of hammered work, at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other; of one piece with the mercy seat you shall make the cherubim at its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings. They shall face one to another; the faces of the cherubim shall be turned toward the mercy seat. You shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark; and in the ark you shall put the covenant that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the covenant, I will deliver to you all my commands for the Israelites.

EXCELLENT!

I deal with Wilsonart all the time too...  the metals are a bit expensive but it is a great company.  We actually use their laminates for high end Home Theater projector screens!
