The ARK Project - Lost? Not yet!
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:37:53 am »
We have top men working on it right now...

Who?

Top... men.

Well, I've finally decided it's time to begin what I think will be my last cabinet.  I'm basing the design on The Ark of The Covenant (with some creative license  ;)).  This was the first Shetchup design I've attempted so my skills aren't quite up to snuff yet.

The dimensions aren't to scale yet and I think this design is too long and narrow but it's a start.  Here's a few other ideas I have sorted out now:

22" CRT monitor turned long ways for vertical games only
One stick (probably Mag Pluses) and three buttons for each player
Amber LED's tucked under the bottom to produce a glowing effect
Provision for two carrying poles, similar to what was used in the movie
Laminate the entire cabinet with Wilsonart gold Metalaminate

I have a sample on the way.  The stuff is expensive! $6.00 a square foot which puts a sheet at around $200.  :o  I estimate using two sheets so this will be the costliest single purchase for the project, by far.

The name is tentatively set as 'Raiders of the Lost Arcade'.  Not the most original name but I think it has a nice ring to it.

Wish me luck!  8)

Nice concept.  Have you seen the stuff in person yet?  Any idea if it will retain that shine with a little wear and tear?  Or if it's going to be a huge fingerprint magnet?

That's going to look sweet! :)  When do you start the build?  Do you have a computer already?

I haven't held it in my hands just yet.  Hopefully this coming week.  I'll post picks and results of the fingerprinting test then.  I may have to invest in a velvet rope and pole setup, too! There is also a brushed style available that I'm looking at.  It may cut down on the visible surface marks.

:o :o :o :o

That's going to look sweet! :)  When do you start the build?  Do you have a computer already?

Thanks, H!  As soon as I get the laminate sample and check it out, I'm going to start cutting the wood.  As far as the pc goes, I figured since I'm only going to be using it for vertical games, I might be able to get away with using a 900mHz Celeron I have laying around.

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this choice?

Dude!? All the design work has already been done for you!

Make it a cubit and a half wide and high, and two and a half cubits long. And of course the frame should be made from acacia wood. Additionally, you're the only one allowed to play games on it, and only once a year.    ;)

First game you play on it better be Indy Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Hehe...  I built four in 2007.  Two for myself and two for family members.

First game you play on it better be Indy Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Sadly, Temple of Doom, the only Indiana Jones inspired video game IIRC, is horizontal.   :(

The one thing that may hang me up here is the artwork.  I feel pretty confident in my Photoshop skills (as fledgling as they are) but I'm more of an image manipulator than anything else.  My freehand skills are pretty lame and I really want this one to be special.  I was actually thinking about comissioning a fan-artist to produce something.  This could get pricey, though...  I'll most likely put something together to see how it comes out.

Eeehr, maybe it's a stupid remark but since it's a cocktail, why don't you put an extra CP on the side so you can at least play horizontal games as well?  ??? You might even make it detachable.
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

That's a valid suggestion.   However, the reason I'm doing a vertical game only design is that I believe it allows me to make the cabinet as "Ark-ish" as possible.  I also have two other scratch built uprights with monitors oriented to favor horizontal games so I can get my fix there.  :)

$400 seems VERY expensive for laminate...  Hell, you could gild that thing in real gold leaf for that!  You might want to check this out...  http://www.gildedplanet.com/compoleaf.asp

The Samples of Doom...

So, the laminate samples arrived today from Wilsonart.  They're covered in a plastic, protective film, which is nice.  Both are 5" x 8", which is a pretty generous size considering what I've received in the past.  One is has a polished gold finish, the other is brushed.  This stuff is difficult to photograph so bear with.

Each style has several pros and cons as far as the project is concerned:

Polished:

Pros -

most closely resembles the finish of the screen used Ark
mirror-like finish is amazing
fingerprints don't show up as much as I would have thought

Cons -

mirror finish may reflect too much of the surroundings, thereby ruining the effect
fingerprints still show (see pro)
scratches are very noticeable

Brushed:

Pros:

No fingerprints
Scratches not as noticeable
Does not reflect

Cons:

Not even close to the movie Ark finish
Appears somewhat dull

This is going to be a hard decision.  The main factor worrying me is that the polished lam will reflect everthing in the room around it and turn it into a hodge-podge of colors (it's literally like having a golden mirror).  While the brushed sample appears dull (technically, I would call it satin) it also looks more "yellow-gold" in color due to it not reflecting anything around it.

The durability aspect doesn't really bother me as the stuff it pretty tough.  I scratched both samples with a screwdriver but I think they will do just fine under normal indoor conditions.  Just keep your zipper tucked in!

$400 seems VERY expensive for laminate...  Hell, you could gild that thing in real gold leaf for that!  You might want to check this out...  http://www.gildedplanet.com/compoleaf.asp

I knew it was expensive going in and I think the laminate will prove to be far more durable than the gilding.  I'll probably end-up having some parts gold electro-plated, though.

J/K  :D  I like it!  I'm actually surprised that nobody has thought of that before!

Not quite.

Like I said in my first post, I knew the name wasn't the most creative but I like it.  Hopefully Ray B. won't see this thread.  I'd hate to have to pay him royalties.  ;D

Everyone else, thanks for the kind words.  I'll be cutting some templates out this weekend.

Cool project, I'm a big Indy fan. :)

I'll throw my 2 cents in here as I work with laminates all the time including the metal ones.
I would go for the brushed one, for the reasons you have mentioned. Fingerprints on the polished one will drive you mad.

It will also be a miracle if you don't scratch a piece or 2 during the build.
They won't be noticeable on the brushed but will stick out like a whip-scar on the shiny stuff.

Also are you purchasing the laminate from a distributor? Home Depot, etc can have quite a mark-up on this stuff.

Knievel, the more I think about it the more I lean towards the brushed.  My original vision was based around the polished finish which is why changing now is such a difficult decision.  I'm still toying with the idea of using some of both finishes as they do compliment each other pretty well.

Also are you purchasing the laminate from a distributor? Home Depot, etc can have quite a mark-up on this stuff.

The price I was quoted was from a Wilsonart distributor.  There's one near me in Tempe, AZ.

Well, I've got the templates drawn up.  Just need to cut them out.  I usually end up doing all the real design work when I'm drawing the pieces on the wood so it takes awhile.  I'm trying to keep it simple enough while still conveying a the general shape of The Ark.  I started to add some fancier curves but decided against it.  I think in the end, a simple design will be better.

I also received the gold t-mold sample in the mail from tmolding.com.  It's a slightly different gold than the laminate but I think it will contrast nicely.  One interesting note;  I never knew this but gold t-mold is actually clear molding with gold tape over the visible surfaces.  Seems durable enough.  Go figure.   :dunno

I like this idea.      I'll see if I can capture and loop that sound effect.  I'm also planning on having an amber glow coming from the underside.  LED strips or a couple of "neon" speaker rings.  I haven't decided which yet.

EDIT:  I captured the humming sound from the Raiders dvd and turned it into a ten minute loop.  I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.  I'd put a smple up but I have no idea how to link to audio files.

Awesome's  8)

This is gonna look scha-weeeet!  :)

The chrome t-moulding is the same as the gold in that its clear plastic with a chrome layer. I used the chrome on my last cab and it its plenty durable so you should be fine there.

Looking forward to seeing the progress :)

I was thinking about what you said about only vertical games, so as not to detract from the original "ark-ness" of it...

Not sure if there would be a way to do this (space restrictions...complexity... etc), but if you could have the side tilt in and out, you may be able to incorporate horizontal games as well..

Of course its something that would have to come out real nice... you wouldn't want it to look crappy or be gimmicky... it would have to be flawless and flow with the whole thing.
Happy Gaming!

You might want to experiment and try to use some sort of translucent airbrush paint over
the samples.  Maybe a yellow or orange.   That way it would look a bit more yellow, as well
as having a more solid color from all angles.  Ive never tried this before, but I suspect its
possible to do.

The design is decent.  But, you may wish to consider getting someone with a lathe to cut you
some nice round legs for it.   Also,  where are the Arks 'Carrying bars' ?  :)

Ive always loved the Jones series,  esp  TOD.  :)

I have considered adding legs, although I was thinking of using aluminum and having it anodized gold.  Funny you should mention the carrying bars as I have always though that they would be a cool addition.  I plan on adding cutouts for them once I have the templates finished.

I've always had a fondness for TOD, as well.  I think it gets a raw deal and is solidly my second favorite of the series.

Well, I have one of the end templates cut out and am part way through the side template.  Here's the result:

Here's a pic of the wing piece drawn out and ready to be cut.

Normally, I don't use templates but I wanted the sides to be perfectly symmetrical, plus I'm doing most of the real design work as I'm drawing the templates out anyway.

In true Indy fashion, I'm making this up as I go...

I'll throw my 2 cents in here as I work with laminates all the time including the metal ones.
I would go for the brushed one, for the reasons you have mentioned. Fingerprints on the polished one will drive you mad.

Maybe you could use the metal, tie it to the flyback transformer on the monitor. If anyone touches it... ZAPP!! Just like in the Bible!
This would take care of the fingerprints too..

Hey there,
My first post in a project thread:)

Whats the dimension of the control panel and have you done a cad layout yet for the controls? I have quite a bit of design experience and have tracked down some high rez scans of some of the props used in indy, If you have a layout I'd love to throw my hat in to help with some design work (for free of course).
