Raid 5 guestions??

For that much cash, why not simply buy a commercial unit?

I have an Infrant ReadyNAS. It does drive additions and you can even replace the whole array (to increase the size) on disk at the time. I used custom built solutions for years, but I got fed up with the hassle.

I filled mine with 4 500GB disks. These disks are actually only 465GB so in total I get something like 1.3TB.

I'd be tempted to buy a Drobo unit

Is drobo any good, what if it dies, how do you get your data?

Drobo is only USB though isn't it?

Besides I'd be scared to hand my data to a proprietary system too.

there's a new droboshare addon that essentially makes it a NAS device.  I've never used one of these units, and your questions regarding recovery are good ones.  Same thing with a proprietary RAID card though; what happens if your raid card dies?

I'm not saying I would definately buy one, but when considering cost, its worth looking into. I think a member here has a drobo unit...can't remember who though.
