hacking a PS2/XBOX gamepad, HOW?
Jaydog:
Oh, and another thing, how will the buttons be mapped out using the PSX/PS2 to Xbox Controller Adapter. will the shoulder buttons be used as the black and white buttons?
Oh, another question regarding the PSX controller. Can anyone tell me the solder point for the ground, I tried useing a continuity tester but it doesn't seem to work.
Howard_Casto:
I believe for that particular adapter the l2 and r2 buttons are indeed mapped to the white and black buttons. And your correct about the future games of the box I just wanted to warn you that they're aren't that many right now. It looks like that all the ground breaking titles are coming out on the xbox this winter. Nintendo is also making some quality games in the future and it is also moddable. You might want to consider it to. I believe there is a psx to gamecube adapter available too.

Note: an original PSX pad is not 100% compatible with the PS2. Most PS2 games require analog support, and if it doesn't find analog on the controller, it won't let the controller work (for example SSX). Only smart developers like Sega realize you don't need analog support for games like VF4 (thank god!)
The PS2->xbox adapter is a good idea (to save you time) but I've always herd of problems with these units in the past for other consoles. But its worth a shot by hacking PS2 pads first and hoping you can adapt to xbox.
Sure hacking analog controls are a bit more difficult, but not impossible! In fact in most cases you can simply ground one pin of an analog control to activate it (at full pressure). Just crack it open and start poking around...this is what hacking is all about...not just asking others for detailed instructions with pictures. Who knows you may learn something new and can share with others here.
The only problem I've encountered with analog controllers is the Sony Dual Shock 2. This pad is hardest to hack in my opinion because most of the traces are imbedded in a plastic ribbon cable. And unless you can micro-solder to the surface mount connector you are S.O.L. Thankfully third party makers like Nyko make PS2 analog pads which are much easier to hack.

Howard, regarding running Mame on the XBox...you do know that now you can run Linux on the PS2 right? Sony is offering it. And you get full documentation to the entire ps2 gpu. So when you can run an entirely new os on the ps2 and run pretty much any linux program you want, I would have to argue with you a bit. I think that the PS2 has WAY more hacking appeal. With linux you can run whatever, even the latest version of XMame. And you can do all of this without having to mod your PS2. Gotta love Sony for releasing Linux for the PS2. Killer move against Micro$oft.
As far as using a PS1 controller with the PS2 games that REQUIRE analog...are you sure that the game will not allow you to play it at all unless you use a DualShock2?
