12 y.o. MAG PC monitor hor. adjustment not working
« on: January 26, 2008, 09:56:44 pm »
I was wondering if any of you guys would know where to start with this.  The horizontal adjustment doesn't seem to be working on this monitor, where everything else seems to be working fine.  It's an older monitor with a dial for adjustment.  The picture extends past the sides of the screen.  Ironically, the horizontal position still works so I can adjust half the screen into the monitor.  I can't shrink it though and that's what I'd like to do.

I can do zoom, but it only scales the display vertically.  Also the pincushion and trapezoid adjustment only work vertically, in essence, they do nothing.  If I can't do anything about it, I was wondering if there was a software quick-fix where I could modify the video out to be narrower.

I can provide the model number if necessary but I figured this is something common to just about all CRTs.

if happened suddenly, would suspect a loose connection in horiz .
look for evidence of arcing ,damaged components , etc...
since the monitor is functional, the cause can not be affecting a critical component in h def.

seeing a print would be helpful !

Oddly enough, it happened all of the sudden when Windows installed a CD drive hooked to the PC.  I have tested it on another PC and same problem.

I've never worked with monitors before and the thing is still in one piece, plastic shell and all but I might go check out the area around that knob.  I'll try not to electrocute myself.

And what do you mean by "print?"  Forgive my incompetence here but I'm a monitor noob.  Thanks.

And yes, just FYI, I'm not going to attempt anything I shouldn't here.  I do have a decent bit of (un)common sense.  So I know to stay away from that tube and all that good stuff, don't freak out guys.  I'm treating this like open heart surgery here.

Here's a little update.  I opened it up and dusted and now the horizontal *something* is kinda freaking out a little.  I don't know if it's the position or the width, but it's fluctuating a good amount while the monitor is running.  Any thoughts now?

print = schematic diagram/service manual .  again , slang on my part :-[

would still look for poor solder connections on the board !
