My try at an overlay
« on: May 15, 2003, 03:15:53 am »
Well, what do you think? This is my first attempt at doing an overlay graphic. The joystick pointers came from Oscar's site, but I changed the colors on them. The big rectangles will hold a standard streetfighter layout.

I can send the original photoshop files of any of these if anyone is interested. 23" x 7" 72 dpi and layers.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

A third try. This one used some art from a scan of a Willis Berzerk overlay.

I am not going to use this one, but I made it anyway. A Lock n' Chase theme.

Ok. This is the one I think I might use. This is a Berzerk panel converted to two player usage. I have this at full size 300 dpi if anyone wants it (over 50 MB).

I like -- if any, you're no Picasso to be honest :) -- the last one without all the generic prismatic effect.. but the Lock 'n Chase is best!  These overlays are simple, but that's probably what you're going for anyways.

2 things, though, on all of them.. space out the 1 and 2P start buttons (or better yet put them both in the middle), change the font, and just put -- if anything -- the word "START" next to them (maybe in a cooler font).

I mean think about it this way.. even if you just printed out the plain design without the 1/2 markings, effects, or even joystick borders, it will still look nice once you put in the joys, multi-colored buttons, and bolts.  You have to keep in mind what the finished product will look and play like.. though I can see the advantage of having the start buttons where they are if you hang out with large-breasted P2s :o

..

I'm still thinking of putting one of those Morrigan/Lilith lesbian scenes on my CP :P

I am still getting back into photoshop. I think I did the best on the Berzerk themes though. I will probably do 50 or 100 overlays before I ever print one out. I am not even sure which cabinet I am going to end up using for my final product.

Actually. I will need two final overlays, as I plan on having two cabinets. One horizontal dual 8-way and one vertical 4-way + trackball (yeah, a Donkeypede setup, but that won't be my theme).

One horizontal and one vertical?  I know about Artic MAME, but what's the other?  Cherry Master MAME? ;)

Yeah, those two are what I have now. But Artic is sold (minus computer) and being picked up this weekend, and I am giving away the Cherry Master cabinet because I need space NOW for incoming games.

(It was either give away the Cherry master or give away the Amazing Maze, and the Amazing maze is complete and I know I'll never see another, and I can get a dead cherry master for $25 to $50 at any auction).

I made this Moon Patrol themed overlay largely from scratch. The Moon Buggy came from the marquee, and the joystick pointers are modifed from oscar's site.

Phoenix theme. For this one I started with a Phoenix overlay, and then I made it generic by removing the instructions and button holes (which was a pain, because some of that stuff overlapped the bird).

Should I keep posting these, or keep them to myself? Thinking about maybe doing a few marquees as well.

They're all very retro looking. Maybe you should set up a page and direct us to it rather than posting like 50+ overlays. Just a suggestion.  ;)

I like the space invaders one! How big do you have it?

My photoshop file on that one is at actual size (roughly 24"x8" at 72 dpi). The file is only 176K, due to the very small amount of colors used.
