| Arcade Freak:
hi folks, i am using windows 98 SE and i am trying to setup the powering off by just pressing the power button as my keyboard is not accessible. But i do not want the scandisk to come up everytime i turn it back on. So in other words i am trying to gracefully shutdown win 98 SE by just pressing the power button like you can do in win XP but i am not having much luck! Does any one have any ideas on what i can do through the registry or something. The power management is enable in bios and the power management in the control panel says to shut down when the power button is press but it does not work....HELP. thanks Calude |

Disable scandisk: Run MSCONFIG I think its uncer 'advanced', there is a checkbox that says something to the effect of 'disable scandisk after bad shutdown.' Not sure if thats what you want, tho. I've done this on my carputer for the longest time, and no probs yet. You might also want to disable disk caching, I think theres an option for that, too. |

I've used, and still do, Win98SE on couple of projects. No shutdown problems.. Do tell, what's your software configuration? Can't help with the info available :( ...........later. |

Sounds like you need to configure the power off settings in your bios. Set it to shutdown, then when you press the power button (on a ATX case) the PC will shut down. Scandisk will not happen at boot if this is set up properly. |

You don't have to do anything fancy with software. By pressing the power button twice, windows 98 will go through a proper shut down sequence and power off. This is what I use for my cabinet, it works great. |
