UK - slot cutting bit.

Hi all,

Does anyone from the UK own a slot cutting / t-molding bit?

If so, where did you get it from?

I've searched the net and visited the DIY stores and can't find one anywhere.

go to your local tool shop.

i dunno if a biscuit jointing bit would be any good, they're pretty easy to find

Thanks for that -- you're right, the DIY shops are crap!

I'm not sure if that would work or not... 

I don't know if the slot is the right width for the t-molding.

Anyone in the UK actually used a bit like this? Or is there a dedicated bit for t-molding.

Ok, so no slot cutting bit, no t-molding for me 

My options are as follows.

Someone once mentioned removing the part of the t-molding that goes in the slot cut, and gluing (jeez, that sounds ugly).

Or, use a bit to round over to give the impression of t-molding, and just paint. I wouldn't, however, paint the imitation t-molding a different colour, I'd use the same colour that I would paint the cab (probably black).

Anyone else any ideas?

Just to add: This is the part that is preventing me from assembling my cab, so if any of you guys in the UK who have build cabs want to add any advice, it would be much appreciated (are there any of you out there?!)...

Biscuit jointing bits are only good if they are for the small units made for picture framing.   Regular size biscuiit slot cutters are too large.

Why not order it from the US or other country that can provide it?   We all put up with more shipping and other duties when not in the USA but is goes with the hobby.

On the other hand this supplier may be local to you.

Thank-you for finding that -- have you used one yourself for this?

It seems that there is very little information out there on this, and the slot that the bit you suggested may be a little wide.

I think the t-molding slot is about an 1/8th" ()    But that slot looks wider, and not deep enough...

I use a 1/16 bit and it works fine for me.

T molding.com says to use a 1/16 bit for anything with a 3/32 spline.

I'll order directly from http://www.t-molding.com/store/home.php. The Dollar-Euro exchange is in my favour ATM. 31 euros for a slot cutter, arbour, and 20 ft of T.
I'll let you know if customs seize the parcel.

Don't gp by the pic is is just a generic slot cutter.  You go by the measurement.  1/16 is only 1/2 of the 1/8 you were thinking it was and 1/8 is definately too large.  T molding is usually 3/32 so 1/16 holds it in very tightly.

ive imported a lot of stuff from hong kong, america and canada, and never once has customs done anything.

If you need a slot cutting bit I don't think you need to order it from the US. You can get it cheaper from continental europe -  from Germany for example : )

In fact, I just ordered one on Ebay for as little as € 8,99 since I needed a new one. To convert the size, you need 1,5 mm for T-Molding and if you are looking for it on the german Ebay, you have to look for a "Scheibennutfräser" : )

Mate I was doing excactly what you are doing now a few month ago , and after checking all the UK sellers for both T-molding and slot cutters I ended up getting both from
T-molding at about half the price I would have paid over here ,and that includes delivery (which was super fast ) and I am SO GLAD I did , no customs on it either .
If your buying your T-molding from T-molding I would recomend you get the slot cutter from them aswell.

I got all my stuff today. It actually arrived on Friday but I didnt get the note until today as it ended up with customs charges on it grr. Still I have made out ok given the exchange rate. The guy at the depo said I was very unlucky to get charged typical!!!!!

My order was $65/£32 and they added £11 + £1 for handling! Everything was ok apart from the arbor was missing the bearing which they had emailed all their recent orders about last week and one is on its way.

T-moulding and cutters are a nightmare to get in the UK, but there's a guy a few miles from me sells both on E-bay.  He doesn't have the slot cutter listed but he does have them for sale, you just have to ask.

My slotter has worked well (Well apart from where I must have angled the router a bit going off centre )and have not had any trouble like I have read elsewhere on here because of a poor quality cutter.

You can get them from trend but it works out at around £35 when you add all the pieces together....so you need to head to these guys..

btw that guy on ebay is far too expensive, I always get my T-molding from www.dreamArcades.com , they ship over here to the UK and are extremely cheap and reliable.

It looks like a straight cutter (if you know what that is) You have to use the router side fence but I routed mine perfectly. The  T moulding looks so much better.

Do you mean that the router was on the edge? Was it stable?

Has anyone any thoughts on this?

Yeah ,I cut the slot when the cab was partly assembled. I laid it on it's back and stood above the front edge and routed away. The side fence was butting up against the outside of the sides. Just take your time and you get a good finish. Don't forget a dust mask as it kicks out fibres. I also connected the vacuum cleaner to the router.
