It was probably Malathion. Malathion is what they use in Florida in trucks similiar to what you describe.

And we, as kids, would run around in the fog behind the truck playing... C'mon, someone else has to have done that...

Are mosquitos attracted to light at all? If so, a bug zapper makes for some cheap entertainment as a bonus.
You could try the Quick and Dirty Mosquito Trap too.
And what about ultra high sound frequencies? Do those repel mosquitos?

I never said anything about a bug zapper inside (though that would be kind of cool too, lol). Mosquitos start out on the outside, meaning that killing them outside keeps them from getting inside in the first place.
However, unfortunately it seems that most varieties of mosquitos are not attracted to UV light, though some bug zappers come with an additional mosquito lure of some sort.
