Ya, thats what he said everyone in his home town (Glasgow) always did, although I wouldn't be surprised if he just made it up as an excuse for not putting up the lights when everyone else did.

I heard that as a kid from somewhere, too. 

But then maybe it was just me wanting the lights & tree to stay up from another 11 days after christmas day. ;D  Most people take all of that down the next day/weekend.  And "forces" like curbside tree pick being only on the week after has prevented me from ever having my tree still up on the 12th day.  People think I'm weird to actually want the decorations still up even 2 days after (and think I'm dog lazy for not taking them down by the first weekend).  Sure I'm lazy, but that's not why I'm leaving 'em up. ;)
