Cab Restorations should have their own forum.
« on: December 15, 2007, 05:00:36 pm »
I think it would be a good idea to have a dedicated Cab Restoration forum apart from custom cabinet builds that documents retorations of existing (or classic) cabs. Currently both coexist in Project Announcements and you have to try and click through to find the Restos.

I think you mean a forum.  They do have their own threads.

I think this has been discussed more than a few times. Most of the time I find restoration threads more interesting than standard project announcements.

Anyways, I vote leave as is. Separating usually makes one or the other suffer.

I voted yes. But that's very just because in all honesty I lost my MAME-cab interest when I started restoring the real things......

Before running into this thread I was looking through Project Announcements and had the same thought.   I like to see custom built cabinets more than seeing how people restore an older cabinet.  Both are worthy of being a Project Announcement but splitting them up in two categories would be nice.

I might also recommend Saint split them up in the main "Examples" page as well.   Basically, have Standup cabinets have two choices (restoration and custom).

I think the custom builds should remain "Project Announcements" and simply add another forum called "Restorations" or "Restoration Projects" or some such.

I voted to split them too.  Also agree with Wundercade that another forum called "Restorations" would be good.

I've always put my "real" arcade restoration threads under ARCADE MISC... it doesn't really belong in the PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENTS (IMHO) as that tends to be more for actual MAME projects, etc.

Anything could be a project I suppose. But the point is...restoration of classics or pre-existing cabs aren't really a similar interest to MAME projects.

Project Announcements is primarily MAME customs. Which is fine...that's what BYOAC is about - MAME.

But most of us hobbyists also love restoring the classics and have matriculated over to KLOV because it has more of that specifically. I think having to troll through a forum about MAME projects is silly when Saint specifically has posed the question about "if there is a specific subject you think needs its own forum run a poll."

I'm just not sure what the vote threshold is for him to seriously consider this idea. :dunno

Nothing scientific - 10 to 20 votes with a significant margin for the idea, along with someone to remind me to look at the votes :)  This one is close to consideration. Is there really a need though? KLOV already exists -- if it's managed well there isn't much point in duplicating effort here. If it was managed poorly that'd be a stronger argument.

KLOV ain't bad, but it isn't as good as this place...I only go there if this place is dead.

I do find myself reposting the same stuff here, to share with my buddies here that I also post over there....not everyone has chosen to be a member on both venues.

The premise for it really boils down to convenience for hobbyists that don't want to scan through a bunch of custom projects and would like a dedicated spot for classics being restored. Besides, KLOV seems to be a hybrid of EE + PA with a single "General Discussion" catch-all forum. Totally different than the organization here.

Well...that's my best pitch...hopefully we can get more votes to back it up.

I was told that my restoration belonged in Arcade Miscellaneous not Project Announcements,
and that Project Announcements was supposed to be only for new scratch-builds,
cab conversions, etc.

 :dunno

My opinion, I don't plan on doing too many restorations, just had one that
fell into my lap.  I guess if a dedicated forum gets made I would like my
thread moved over there...

I'd like to see restorations have their own forums.  I think the "Arcade Miscellaneous" Forum should be about small repair projects relating to arcade games and pinball machines, and other questions relating to real cabs that are being worked on.

"Project Announcements" should be about custom built cabinets and conversions.  A restoration isn't really a "project" in terms of building your own arcade cabinet which is the title of the forums.   ;D

Maybe if it's the restoration consists of only cleaning the trackball and/or fixing a arcade board it would be better suited in Arcade Misc. I'd say most restoration projects go through the same steps as a custom built. At least the ones I saw in project announcements did.
