One thing thats pretty neat that they did to help it look more like a cartoon is they developed (or at least the first to use) a new type of camera that will keep everything on screen in focus.  So distant scenery should remain in focus even while their doing a closeup of something else.

ahofle:
Wow, is it me or did those obviously CGI racing scenes look worse than the gamecube version of FZero?  :laugh2:

hehe, obviously you haven't seen the trailer or screen stills. The car is in focus, some random portion of a building and skyline is in focus, but the track is just a bunch of blurry ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

Well I think the majority of the car scenes are done in cgi, so that wouldn't take a new type of camera to put into focus.  I have watched the trailer and I didn't see any evidence of the new camera, but supposedly they did use it.

Zero_Hour:
I was a HUGE Speed Racer fan when I was a kid (watched it on the local UHF station in the 70's). I cringed when I heard they were attempting a live action version of it. I just saw the trailer last night. If the whole movie compares to the trailer, I will absolutely love it.

Seriously, the over the top melodrama? The Cars that completely ignore the laws of physics and good design? The Nonsensical Race Tracks? The complete hokeyness of it all? This is what Speed Racer was all about. Hell even Racer X* is placing prominently in the story. I can't complain about much except it seems like Sparky got 86'd out of this go round. Looks like a good excuse to eat some popcorn and forget about the real world for an afternoon.

Your Mileage May Vary.  ;D

*Unknown to Speed, Racer X is secretly his older brother, Rex, who ran away from home years ago!
