Help. Export Vector Artwork out of Paint Shop Pro
« on: December 05, 2007, 11:09:25 pm »
I did not build this file, someone else did.  All I want to do is to be able to export out the vector artwork created in Paint Shop Pro, bring it into Illustrator CS, and edit it as necessary.  I am not familiar with this software, I only use Illustrator, so that is part of my problem.  I went into more detail about what I tried in my post;

Can anyone help me out?

You should be able to open it in PSP and save it as an eps, but chances it won't be as pretty as an ai.  Why anybody would want to use PSP to vectorize is beyond me.  :dunno

I don't know if you went to the post or not....but, what it says there, is I tried to save it out as a "vector" format, which in PSP, all the common formats are lumped into one option (.eps, .ai, etc).

When I save that file, it asks me if I want to merge the image, based on my settings.  I have no idea what settings those might be, I did a default install of the software....maybe it's in the image?  I don't know.  But, even when I say ok, hoping maybe it didn't merge it, it comes out as a raster flattened image.

This is version Photo X2, and the same thing happens with version 8, which the original creator has.

And, on the note of why you would want to create it in PSP, you know, I understand when you only have certain resources available to you.  Most of us would never use Photoshop Elements when there is Photoshop, but for example, a mom and pop store who only want things to be simpler and more turn key, that appeals to them, and so PSP appeals to a certain demographic as well.  It only causes problems in situations like this.

Yes, I read your post.

The only other suggestion I can offer is to break it off into layers and save each layer out to an eps then import eps files back into illustrator.

I'm not confident that you're going to find a native psp to .ai tool as you have already stated not being able to find.

Zorg - Good suggestion, don't know why I hadn't thought of that...

However, it doesn't appear that there is a .pdf option when I do a save as.

I also got a suggestion yesterday to try to save the file out as a .wmf.  That saved it out as vectors, but the vectors became so bad that it was not usable.  In order to do the .wmf, I deleted the one raster layer, and then saved it.  I also went back and did the same thing for an .ai/.eps, but no luck, still flattened in Illustrator.

I haven't actually done separations of each color onto separate layers.  I don't understand the undlying thought there of how that would be different than just saving the regular vectors.

Can someone explain how that would be different?

I downloaded Inkscape, and it wouldn't open a .psp, import a .psp. or even paste from a .psp, not even as a bmp like some of the other vector software.

There are a ton of different file formats...too many to list, I suppose I could take a screenshot....

So far I have tried saving it as an .eps, .ai (same option) and a .wmf.  You can't write out as a .svg or .pdf, so I don't know of any other formats that are vector in nature to try.  A .ps I suppose...

Spaced Ace,

I would love your help...I just enlisted someone else to try and see if they could figure it out.

Let me get back to you in a week if I haven't heard anything.

Interestingly, CorelDraw X3 doesn't natively handle PSP files.  However, Photopaint does.  If all else fails, I can try and move it from PhotoPaint to CorelDraw, and then export it to Illustrator.

It's Corel Photo Paint a raster only software?  Will it preserve the vectors?  Do you know anything about this, do you have both Paint Shop Pro and Photo Paint that you would be able to test that theory?

I only have CorelDraw and PhotoPaint.   I don't know if this version will rasterize it or not.  I'm going to go with probably, given what you mentioned earlier.  That said, I could always try forcing CorelDraw to deal with the file and see what comes out of it.
