Shadow Force (MAME)
« on: November 20, 2007, 01:42:57 pm »
Ok, here's my quickie review of Shadow Force, a good,
if generic, beat 'em up that I played last weekend w/ my
son.

My son (age 4) and I (age above 4  ;D) and I have been
playing the Spider-Man arcade game for awhile but I was
in the mood for something a little different.  I came across this
baby while I was going through my rom collection.

The game overall plays like a cross between TMNT (4 players,
lots of ninjas) and X-Men (super ninja powers = mutant power).
You get to select 1 of 4 different ninjas,  classic male, red guy,
wolf guy, and a girl ninja.

Then you get to pick the locale where you start, either a
construction site (cityscape), weapon factory (inside the factory),
or a... secret forest??  Um, yeah.  Whatever locale you select,
you eventually get to the other locales, as they go in a rotation.
I haven't picked through all the locales yet, but I have to wonder
what happens if you get through all three.

The combat animations and controls are superior to Spider-Man
and X-Men.  The girl surprisingly has better moves than the
male ninja in my opinion -- a lot of flipping and tossing opponents
around.

My opinion, the special-effects-mutant-ninja-powers are
as-good, if not better:

At the end of the level, you face a nondescript boss-ninja with
very little dialogue (a good thing!).  Not too tough, but you do
lose a few quarters on him...

When you defeat him, you get an idea of who wins/loses the
round by how many enemies you defeated..

Afterwards, you have a player-vs-player treat where you each
get to select a different enemy character and pound on each
other for bonus points.  After you defeat or get defeated by
your opponent, you shed an "outer armor" and go back to your
orignal character for a final versus-round.

Edit:  I have no idea why you have to fight each other, then go
back to being on the same side.  The only way I could explain
it to my son was that we were not fighting "for real", only
training our super-ninja powers for the real battles (kinda like
an X-Men Danger Room session for you comic book buffs).

All in all, a fun way to kill a few hours...

you seem to have missed the key feature of this game, which is that you can transform into virtually any of the normal enemies during a level...

True!  I guess it pays to use the 6th button every once in awhile  :banghead:

Anyway, it is a cool effect but I don't think I liked
any of the enemies' moves better than my guys'
