Vector game performance in mame
« on: March 15, 2002, 12:06:50 pm »
What can I do to tweak vector games in mame? Without spending any money?

I have noticed that most of the vector games are very slow and choppy on my machine.

I know my pc is not fast (200 mhz), but it is fast enough for most pre 1986 games, and the same games in Retrocade run at full speed on my PC.

I would realy like to get the MAME version of Warrior to run well, becuse it has sound and the Retrocade version does not.

I know I can upgrade the motherboard, but funds are a little tight right now.  Where is a good place for newe rmotherboards?

Which other emulators?

I know about Retrocade, and the even older CineEmu.

The games I am most interested in are Warrior, Star Castle, Rip Off, TailGunner, Armor Attack, Battle Zone, Tempest and Red Baron.  These machines got most of my allowance and lunch money during High School.

Retrocade runs them all, but does not have sound for some of them.

check out www.pricewatch.com. i am getting a 900 mhz t-bird bearbones kit for under $100. it includes the case, fan, and motherboard/processor combo. oddly enough its cheaper than just the motherboard/processor combo! go to the site and click the pc kits link   :)

TigerHeli,

The two games in particular that I am most concerned about are Warrior and Tail Gunner.  The older MAME releases do not run them, the newer MAME releases run them to slow, and Retrocade does not support sound for them.  Tail Gunner has no sound support anywhere as far as I know.

So for now I will have to settle for playable but without sound in Retrocade. Retrocade does have sound for most of the rest of the vector games.

I did see a reccomendation to set the sample rate lower, I will give that a try as well.

I am not totally familiar with Tail Gunner and Warrior ???, but I did do some digging for you 8).

According to CatVer.ini, both games were added in R35B6 (warrior and tailg; warriorb was R37b10).

tiger most of the time you need to order by phone and mention that you saw the special price on pricewatch. they dont give those prices to everybody sometimes. they give lower prices thru pricewatch. i have ordered things featured there a LOT and never gotten a price different than what is listed on pricewatch. you just have to call sometimes.  ;)

Thanks Darkmanx!!!  And you're right, they do have better deals on the bare bones than the M/B combos.  Go Figure!

no prob. i was kinda pissed at first too when i looked on the site and it said one price, then i went to the actual sellers' site and it was way higher. then i noticed some said "price for phone orders only - must mention pricewatch". some of them fail to mention this so if you find a different price on their site call em.

TigerHeli,

I had downloaded r36b91, and I did not see warrior or tailg in the gamelist.txt.  After reading you last reply, I did a mame -listfull, and there they were in the list.

I cannot get it to run on my laptop at work, so I will nee d to wait until I can try them at home.

Thanks for the info.
