Eratic/Jittery TT2 Spinner Playing Tempest
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:36:00 pm »
Has anyone experienced a eratic/jittery spinner with a TT2? In Tempest it makes the game virtually unplayable. I can't even play Pole Position with it. The car doesn't turn worth a damn.

I just reinstalled XP and upgraded to Mame 119U2. Has anyone had any problems after upgrading to Mame 119U2? I'm grasping trying to figure this out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure that your spinner is not mapped to any other keys or your joystick.  Look at the config menus in MAME while you are playing a game.

I have the spinner as "mouse z" and I don't see anything else using mouse z if that's what you mean.

check to see if the spinner is set to anything else besides 'mouse z'  If nothing then start messing with the analog settings.

I only got that kind of problem when I had the controls set to keyboard presses and accidentally pressed them while the game was running. As long as you don't press any buttons or other controls it will work fine. But best thing to do is to remap it so nothing but the spinner controls it.

Did you set the sensitivity to 6% in the analog controls menu?

Did you remap dial analog to mouse Z axis?  (correct)
Or remap dial inc & dial dec to mouse Z axis?  (wrong)

Encryptor, did you figure this out.  I just installed a trackball on the X Y axis and moved TT2 spinner to the Z axis and now I am getting the same problem.  the trackball works great, but now the spinner has huge backspin.  Even lowering the sensitivity to 1% in the game is still not working.  I downloaded the USB program to change the polling rate and tried all three options and still got nada.  The spinner is the only control on Z.  I just don't get it.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks. :banghead:

As the spinner is on the Z-Axis, you'll need to make sure that any settings for the scroll wheel under Windows are down to the minimum.  Normally it is set for 3 or more "lines" per tick of the wheel, which would likely cause the problems you are seeing.

Also make sure that a recent version of MAME is being used.  Earlier versions were far more sensitive on the Z axis than X and Y due to the way Windows handled the scroll wheel internally.  The Z input was divided down some time ago.  What version are you using?

Thanks Randy.  I set the mouse scroll rate to 1 line from the control panel.  Still no go.  I am using Mane32 v0.120.

I'm thinking that the version of MAME you have may not be using the divided Z.  If you connect the spinner back to the X axis without changing the sensitivity settings, does everything work ok?  If so, you will need to use a different version of MAME, or move your trackball to a dedicated interface and put the spinner back on X or Y.

Anybody know in which version this change was effected?

I changed the scroll mouse wheel settings as you suggested Randy and it did make the problem better. The spinner isn't as jittery and erratic but it looks like it is still way over sensitive and I have the sensitivity down to 1%. For example just nudging the spinner in Tempest moves it a complete revolution or more on the screen.

I'm using Mame .119U2 with XP. Thanks for the help.

I am having a similar problem with Tempest with "backspin" as mentioned above.  I have the TT2 on the X and Y axis.  Also, does anyone know how to access the sensitivity options (analog) for the spinner in MAME?

Stumped.

** UPDATE ** - I found the Analog % setting in the DIP menu (tab key).  This seemed to tame the TT2 and seems to work great.  However, anyone know what the digital control is for?  Does that control the fire button in Tempest?  What's the optimal setting?

Anyone know the optimal settings for Tempest and the TurboTwist 2?  (using MAME .119)

I think I got it finally working.  I took Randy advice and kept on trying different Mame versions and PowerMame32 ver. 105 seems to keep the z-axis stable.  I don't know why PowerMame and not any of the other versions.  Does anyone one know who PowerMame stopped at ver. 105?

DeLuSioNal29, the optimum setting according to Randy is about 6 or 7.

To use the Z-axis for the spinner, you'll need to apply a patch to MAME and recompile like TopJimmyCooks mentions here.

If not, one transition on the spinner wiil move you 4 steps due to how Windows handles Z-axis inputs.
