Rounding Large Angle Joints
« on: October 19, 2007, 01:05:13 pm »
I'm building a multi-sided box with angles larger than 90 degrees.  I'd like to round the edges of the box for a more finished look.

Is this possible using a router, or is there another way to do this besides sanding freehand?

depends on how much past 90 you are talking about.  Normaly I'd use a belt sander the length of the edge and do it freehand.  I've posted these pics before but here they are again.  the before and after using a belt sander and 80 grit followed by a random orbit sander with 100, 120, 220 grits to smooth things out.  Make sure to use a respirator if you have MDF and don't do it in the house.

Did you have multiple levels of MDF under there so you could sand off the pointed edge seam without exposing a gap between the MDF pieces after sanding?  I mean it seems like you could not just have started with two pieces of 3/4 MDF meeting together and then decided to sand off the leading edge .... since this would have left a gap showing after sanding was done .... correct?

It would nice to see a picture on the control panel without the side piece attached so I can get a better idea of what the MDF looked like underneath the top and front pieces.

Did this make any sense   :dunno ..... hard to explain.

Thanks for the pics K.

unclet:  I think he just has the corner meeting at a miter joint so as long as the angles match on both ends, there wouldn't be a gap.
