mame .61 with .61 roms

Whenever I input mame 32 to run the games at full screen it exits out of mame.  Not sure why this is since my hardware seems to be efficient.  The games run fine in a window, except the sound stutters (ms pacman, tapper, and new games).  I assume the sound stutter will work itself out when the game runs by itself and not with windows in the visual background (I imagine this takes up too many resources).  Can someone make a suggestion?

Also I have an old logitech mouse (it is an actual trackball mouse, not a mouse mouse.  it has a little red built in spinner ball) i was thinking of using in my cabinet for mouse controls and hopefully as a trackball.  I've been searching the forums but haven't found a "how to guide" yet.  If someone can pin-point me, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks gentlemen.

Two things.....

Get the updated drivers for the video card.  Up the ram on the machine.  I am guessing here that you are using Windows XP.

Yes, I am using XP.

So upgrading the ram will stop the stuttering or prevent mame from closing out on me?

edit:
I am probably going to upgrade my gaming PC soon, so I will more than likely take the old mobo and processor and put it in a new case and use it in the arcade.  So if there is a way to fix the exiting problem without upgrading, then great.

Hoopz:

Try updating the video card's drivers first.  That may eliminate the full screen issue.  If so, the sound problem could go away but I would suggest tackling that issue last.

If it does still stutter, more memory may help.  Do you have any other processes running in XP?  That may have some effect also.

Malenko:

RAM shouldn't be the issue with the stuttering, especially if its games like Ms PacMan.

updated video drivers will fix the full screen problem, and upgrade your direct X as well
