Weight of 3/4 Plywood?
« on: September 08, 2007, 02:34:11 am »
I was checking out a sheet of 3/4 cabinet grade (with an oak veneer) plywood.
Can any tell me what this roughly weighs?
I'm building a custom Juke and I can almost get all of the pieces out of 1 sheet.

My other options are 3/4 MDF, which I'm concerned will be heavier and not as strong / good to screw into.
Or thinner material, but the 3/4 is really better for my purpose.

Someone over in Woodworking posted a link to a nominal thickness/size + type vs weight chart. Unfortunately, I can't find the link or thread.  :-[

I remember the thread you're talking about, but did a couple searches and couldn't locate it. (it was very detailed)

I did find enough information to answer my question:
Quote
Obscure, yet important pieces of information that I've discovered so far.

1) How much does 3/4" MDF weigh compared to 3/4" maple/birch plywood?

The plywood is about 72 pounds per sheet (48" x 96") and the MDF is 96 pounds per sheet (49" x 97").  So MDF is about 32% heavier.

thanks for the info Skadar: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=43565.0

danny-galaga:  the 3/4" weighs TWICE as much as 3/8"! :laugh2:

For future reference to anybody looking for the weight of various plywoods, it is roughly 100 lbs for 1" and appropriately divided from there:

1/4" about 25lbs, 3/8" about 37lbs, 1/2" bout 50lbs, 5/8 about 62lbs, 3/4" about 75lbs...etc

My system is based on 4'x8' sheets, it also applies mostly to fairly standard grades of plywood, like A/C or B/C, or C/D.  I wouldn't have as much faith in it when referring to Apple Ply, Super Ply, or Shop Birch, although I doubt it would be far off.

I think this is another attempt at fractional humor  :dizzy:
3' by 6'  is 3/4 of a 4' by 8' sheet.  :dunno

ahem, ahem. No it's not. 4'x6' would be 3/4 of a 4'x8' sheet. 3x6 would be 56.25% of a sheet.
