New Bartop Build - Inspired by The WidowMaker!
« on: August 02, 2014, 08:46:51 pm »
I have been contemplating building a bartop for some time now.  I was debating a weecade clone or buying a flatpack and just doing the finish work but ended up always going back to Leapinlew's WidowMaker.  I have used his project as the inspiration for this build.  I am using 3/4" MDF and will be going for a 2 player Street Fighter layout.  I am debating if I want to put a track ball on.  I am completely up in the air as far as an artwork style to go with.  It will house a 19" 4:3 lcd.  I am planning on using 2x Omni2 joysticks and Electric Ice LED buttons.  Red/Blue.  Day one pictures will be coming in a few minutes!

- Ended up going with electric ice buttons and 2x U360s.

All the wood is cut.  This is a mock up of how it will look assembled.  Needs to be sanded in different spots.  Only mistake I made was not factoring the wood width for the back panel so I can either trim 3/4 off the base attach the back panel on top of the base as opposed to behind.  I think I will probably shave 3/4 off the base...

Gonna be building a Widowmaker for my son who just moved out as well.  Following this thread to look for pitfalls. :)

Okay... So I realized I am terrible at build progress pictures!  I wind up in the garage and am just too lazy to go back in for my camera...  So at this point I am about 90% complete.  Mostly finish work and fixing little mistakes that needs to be done.  Biggest mistake was mounting the piece of MDF that goes under the marquee area slightly crooked. At this point I still need to cut vents in the back door (at the moment the door is just removed as opposed to hinged.  I also need to figure out exactly how to mount all my computer components as I am using a pretty bulky cpu cooler and large video card... I have all my artwork ordered just waiting for it to come in.  I made a mock up marquee to see how it is going to look.  Pictures will be up in a few minutes!  Currently trying to decide if I should add pinball buttons or if 19" is just way too small...

I would say I am pretty satisfied with how this build turned out.  I learned a lot and made some rookie mistakes.  I'm already itching to build another!  Maybe a cocktail...

Mock Up - Primed and Painted

Good Shot of the Control Panel Cut and Painted

Spray painted Bezel -  I will be redoing this as one of my lines was a little crooked... I just need to pick up some more plexi...

T Molding on - Mock Artwork in - Buttons and Joysticks wired... Waiting for Control Panel and Side Art to come in...

Poorly Cut Mock Up of Artwork

It Lights Up!

looks really good, you should be proud!  I often wondered why Lew's cab wasnt copied more, I think its a great design.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Here is a link to that widowmaker.

I wonder if anyone has a bar of bartop arcades yet?
