...another dead wrestler

In Oz they generally send fire fighters to fight fires. However, to be fair, you have to understand that here in Oz you can toss away a smouldering match and before you know it three suburbs are gone and a couple of people are dead (and that's only a slight exaggeration too). The only time an engine will come in addition to an ambulance is if it's a car crash and the operator either can't confirm that nobody is trapped (and thus needs to be cut out of their car), or the other vehicle was a tanker that is now leaking who knows what all over the road.

If you call '000' (which is 911 in Oz) and say "I just came home and my husband isn't breathing" they will only ever send an ambulance unless you finish that sentence with "because of all the smoke filling up the house" (in which case they send *both*).  :dunno

On a related note, that show with William Shatner doing the voice overs became so popular over here that they ended up having to hire him to do an extra 30 second spot that was added to the start and end of every broadcast in Oz reminding Australians that calling 911 doesn't work here! It was crazy, like one of those "only in America" moments, but here!  ;D

Here in my city, firefighters are required to be EMT trained.  Invariably, fire trucks are the first on the scene in large metro areas because they scatter firehouses to cover the city effectively, and since they have to build them large enough to house the fire trucks, it appears they figured "well, let's throw the ambulances there too".

There are private ambulance companies, and there are the ones from the fire department.  The private companies usually transport people when it's not an "emergency" or if they're contracted out by a city.

Firetrucks also show up for car accidents with all the stuff to put out a possible car fire and whatnot, and given their line of work, they're far more likely to be responding to something where injuries tend to occur, so it's one infinitesimally small example of doing something because it just makes sense.

I see the words, and I KNOW they're English, yet still have no idea what exactly the hell you're saying.

Carry on
