good 27" for mame + console cab
« on: July 22, 2007, 12:45:10 am »
Looking to buy a good 27" tv to use in my cab. Have been looking at several. Is there 1 or 2 overall favorites to use? I will be trying to use component out from my video card. It has s-video as well if that doesn't go over smoothly. It has to fit into the ULTIMATE ARCADE II cabinet.

Try searching locally for a "presentation monitor".  I picked one up from Craigslist locally.  The guy wanted to sell it for $75 and I emailed him for some specs.  It turned out I was the only one to even contact him so he said to come pick it up for free.

It has the standard s-video/composite for consoles, but also has a vga input (I think at 800x600, but good enough for mame)

I believe the one I picked up was a 29".  Big and heavy!

Good luck

Ideally you'd like one that has the ability to power on after a power failure, like when you flip the switch on the powerbar or your smart strip powers down. This will help if you are looking for the "one switch to rule them all" approach.

Also make sure that it remembers what channel it was on, or will stay on your input... nothing more frustrating than your TV always turning on to channel 3 or something.

I am using a JVC AV-27530 TV in my cabinet.  It has component video inputs, remembers its settings after power off, and should fit into an UA II cabinet.  I stuffed it into a standard Midway 25" cabinet with a little persuasion.  The display looks really good using a DVI-to-component adapter and an ATI Radeon 9550 video card.

Here is the thread:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=54556.0

I have 29" presentation monitors, but they are a tad too wide for the 25" cabinets.  They would also stick out the back since they are basically rectangular boxes measuring 26"x20"x20" (WxLxH).  They will fit into a standard Lusid's cab though since the monitor angle is more vertical, as opposed to the Midway cabs, which have their monitor slanted way back.

I'm using a Sony Trinitron 27", it remembers settings and powers back on.

Alternatively, if you don't have one that powers back on but remembers
settings, you can always hack the TV power button to a hidden
arcade pushbutton.  My website has a page that shows how to do
this even though I didn't need to w/ the Sony.

I picked up a 27" Sony Trinitron locally for $40 ... mint condition (2000)

It remembers power setting (Essential! many TVs do... test them) but it only has S-Video  (no component or VGA) ... I guess it's worth looking around for a TV with component inputs.

Oh.. it's HEAVY :)

Just make sure you don't get one of those "HD Ready" TVs... (some of the early CRT models are up for grabs cheap nowaday too) they just look too "sharp" IMHO... None of that scanlines/blur goodness going on..
