This will be my second "cabinet" that I have built.  It all started with finding an Atari keychain at Oshmans on clearance for 6$.  I though it would be a funny gimmick for the office and I had a small B&W 5inch TV up there for AM radio (also clearance at CVS).  My desk became a popular hotspot with people playing Pong, Break-out, and Warlords.  I was really surprised at how smooth the POT was on this...  So I decided to build a mini cabinet for my desk.

I was inspired by markrvp's setup for his son so I also picked up the following:

Namco1: Ms. Pac-man, Galaga, Pole Position, Mappy, and Xevious
Namco2: Pac-man, Pac-man Plus, Super Pac-man and PAC and PAL
ADDITIONS:
Namco3: Pacman, Bosconian, Galaxian, Rally X, Dig Dug
Capcom: Commando, 1942, Ghost N' Goblins
Konami: Frogger, Gyruss, Rush N' Attack, Time Pilot, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Scramble
Radica: Space Invaders, Phoenix, Lunar Rescue, Qix, and Colony 7

also for Note here are the Atari games: Pong, Breakout, and Warlords

I needed to go color and I had an old PSone 5inch LCD from my CarPC hacks in the bucket-o-parts so I dug it out and hooked up a temp solution.  It works better than I could have hoped for.  My plan is to use a Tornado Terry's Happ Joystick, two buttons, and either hack saw the pole position shaft and add a spinner knob, or if I can combine the controls into one using the atari pot.  I'll attack that when I get to the control panel build.

Here are some shots to kick this off (Sorry I got a little picture crazy):

VIDEO EXAMPLE:

Here is a 95% done shot:

More pics on page 2 at the end...

Namco's in a temp setup to get it all working and get the height where I wanted it:

Pac-man Main Menu on LCD:

Pac-man Menu Button, thinking of including this on the CP.

Pac-man on LCD:

Ms. Pac-man:

Galaga:

Let me know if you need more examples of games on this LCD,  :dizzy: :laugh2:

Thats pretty sweet. I'll be real interested to see how you get all 3 of those hooked up to one controller.

That's pretty cool, I'm currently doing a similar project (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=68524.msg698466).  I'm just using the ms. pac-man jakks joystick game board and a 5" gamecube LCD I had hanging around.  I actually just finished painting it this weekend, just have to finish the artwork and figure out how I'll apply it and I'll be done :)

Keep us updated on this project, should be really fun when it's all done.  I'm really interested in the cabinet you make.  Looks like you already have some of it (if not all) cut out.  More pics please...

I was originally going to have it really small (9 inches tall), but once I got the sides cut and put them up next to the LCD+Joystick it was going to be too tight...

I think I am going to go with a modified version of the "Pixelbox" that vrf did. I am horrible with A.I. but I think I have it the way I want it now.  It should end up somewhere around 13 tall X 15 high...  I think this size will give me the ability to have bezel art and a fullsize joystick/plus the Pole Position knob.

I ordered some parts from TT's so I hope to at least have the control panel done this week.

I'll post some pics later of my progress.

Cool - good luck. What I particularly like is the use of the jakks at work so everything is nice and legal.

My current cabinet is 19" and has a CRT in it. I tried to keep things to scale so I could keep the artwork on it.

One thing to watch out for... I've seen people play pretty rough with Ms. Pacman and Galaga while trying to dodge either a ghost or bullet. Could fling the whole cabinet off your desk. Some way to secure it might be a good idea.

Okay, two de-cased and one to go:

This is the Atari de-cased with the solder points for the two buttons (fire, menu)

This is the pot for the Atari.  I want to combine the three points on each system and see the Pole Position control works on the atari.  I think If I only power up one at a time I can use the same control for each.

More good solder points...  This should be easy

Namco Pot for Pole P., I like the spring to center on this one.

Namco 2 Board:
Oh thank god, a common ground and nicely labeled.
DAMN this thing looks like it has been in service for 20 years. I just got it last week but the date is 05...  Guess it sat in Target for a long time.  :laugh2:

Here is a test of the new knob on the Namco:

Instead of hoping for the best, why not measure the resistance on both pots with a multimeter? That way you'd know if it'll work before doing all the rewiring and hacking.

Looks like the RadioShack knob fits, though!

I guess I should have worded it better. Are you making all of the games and your screen run off of one power source?

Ahh, I get it now.  That is actually why I have been so quite.  I have been experimenting with different methods of powering the boards.

TEST PANEL:

CONTROLS:  I have two power bricks setup that are plugged into a switched extension cord.  One of them is for the LCD as it run at 7.5 volts at 3 AMPS.  The other is a 6v 300ma and powers the rest of the boards.  I tied the arcade controls to a central distribution block with screw on connectors on the other side (I used some old Banana plugs from a stereo).  At that point I can connect the U,D,L,R,A,B and Menu/Pause of each board to the terminals.  So all of the "Control" portion of the JAKKS boards are connected to the same point.

POWER/AV:  Here is where it gets tricky.  The thought here was to use a 4 port AV switcher to switch between the different boards.  It is a small board with Audio/Composite/Svideo.  I cut a few Svideo cables apart and wired them to the JAKKS boards for power.  I then used the master side of the AV switcher to send the Audio out/Video out to the LCD, and the power in for the boards in through Svideo.  then each board is connected to AV1, AV2, Av3, etc.  So if you have none of the AV buttons selected, none of them receive power.  When you press AV1, it powers that board and switches to that A/V selection.

The great thing about this setup is that you would only be powering one board at a time so they could all be tied together from a controller standpoint. The problem I have run into on my test panel is that somehow the other boards are still getting power even though the 6v's is only being supply to one board, the other boards are powering up.  I don't know if it is a grounding problem or what but it has been driving me crazy all weekend.  It seems that the other boards are RECEIVING power through the White/Yellow plugs which is crazy.  The setup still works but it was just concerning when the LED's for each board lit up when I power on one of them.

I think I will take a break from the electronics for a while and move to the woodworking.  Pictures speak louder than words so I will go take a few so you can see what I am talking about.

Pictures added...

Here are some mockup's with cardboard to get a feeling for the joystick, buttons, etc. This is 10 inches wide from outside to outside.  I am thinking about bumping that up to 11 - 12 wide to give me a little more room for the (POT) spinner control.  That will go in the upper right corner.  The Yellow button is Menu/Pause, the red is A/Fire and the Black is B/Shift.  I was thinking of having a little vinyl label on the black button with LOW above it and HIGH below.  This would give the "feel" of a shifter.  ;)  I am also thinking of switching the joystick to the Ms. Pacman height for a shorter throw.  I think that will look better.

This is very rough...

Well I redid the cardboard to get rid of the power supply graphics which were throwing me off.  I used some old black foam board and up'ed the width to 11 inches.  I am still not quite sure about the control panel.  I am trying to keep enough room for the steering control in the top right corner parallel to the menu button but still have it be comfortable to play with both buttons.  I think it still needs some re-adjusting.

I got that Ms Pacman Jakks unit, thinking I could hack it like the other Jakks.  Boy did I get into trouble trying to figure that pot and trying to get the unit back together again.  :o

Any idea how to shorten the shafts, and to replace the balltop without the radioshack knobs?

Great idea and I like the use of the Jakks for the office to keep it legal.

Once they see this mini cab you will have to make one for the lunchroom!

I am currently using the pot on the atari handheld connected back to the Ms. Pacman board.  It works the same as the other one but doesn't have any tension.  I know what you mean about that casing for the dial on the JAKKS.  Those springs are hard to get back together.

I remember reading somewhere about someone taking a hacksaw to their shaft but you would still need to use some kind of spinner knob.  I wonder if a rotary joystick would work?  Isn't the bottom just a POT? :dunno

If you have access to a dremel tool with a metal cutting disc it would cut that puppy off real quick. Then it's just a matter of finding what ball top you like and epoxy-ing it on. You could even use hard rubber gumball machine balls with a hole drilled in them to put on.

Rotary joysticks are digital inputs, not analog.  They just "click" and rotate your character 45 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise.

Two questions for anyone:

1.  Does anyone know what font the HIGH/LOW on the Pole Position CPO is?

2.  Does anyone have a decent copy of the Ms. Pacman / Galaga 20th Anniversary Marquee?

I think the high/low is for the gear shifter (you're either in high or low gear in the game).  On these small joysticks, I think it's just a button that switches you back and forth.

The font doesn't look like anything terribly special to me. Just a bolded sans-serif font in all caps. Maybe Helvetica or Arial or Univers.

Unless you're really picky and need an exact match that no one would ever notice.... Can't help there.

Thoughts?  I would love opinions, good or bad.  The Galaga bezel side has been tough as there arn't any good Galaga Instruction Cards out on the web.  Does anyone have a 300 dpi version of the galaga instruction card?

Ha.  I thought it was an odd question, should have read it better before replying.  If you can get a clear enough picture of the font, try sticking it in http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/.  I have used that with suprisingly accurate results in the past.

I really like this little project.  How hard would it be to hook up one of those PSone LCD screens to an actual computer to run MAME?

Believe it or not they are RGB  :applaud: :o

You can hook a vga cable to it (hack) and use powerstrip to get the sync correct.

So, pretty easy.  Let me find an example link.

LINK: http://starfox.ucc.asn.au/carcomp/serio_lcd.htm
This is the PAL version but the NTSC version would be basically the same hack.  Also, now that I look back at it, am I seeing that right?  15 Hz?  Would a Jamma board connect directly to this thing??  :o :o Nevermind, I see the 25Hz refresh rate now...

 Property      Value      Property      Value
Pixel Clock    ~15mhz    Horizontal Back Porch    78 pixels
Composite Sync    Checked    Horizontal Total    936 pixels
Interlaced    Checked    Vertial refresh rate    ~25hz
Horizontal Sync    Positive    Active Vertical Lines    576 lines
Vertical Sync    Positive    Vertical Front Porch    42 lines
Horizontal Scan Rate    ~16khz    Vertical Sync Width    4 lines
Active Horizontal Pixels    720 pixels    Vertical Back Porch    22 Lines
Horizontal Front Porch    42 pixels    Total    644 lines
Horizontal Sync Width    96 pixels

I believe those Multi-Input switchers have a signal booster.  This may
be what is causing the extra power to turn the other games on.

If you are only going to have one board on at a time,  then I
do not believe it would be any problem to tie all the video
line together.

The only thing you will then need to do,  is to have a
switch for powering each board separately.  (which
you may have done, but I have not read the entire
post thru yet)

Ok, I see what you are doing now.

I believe the inputs for Svideo share wires with the composite.

Its suprising that the power can run thru the vid cord and
make the board work tho.

A thought is that since composite only needs two wires,
then maybe you can see if you can find the two wires not
shared with the svideo can be used.

However, somewhere it still may ground into the system.
Not sure really.

Yeah I checked the two points I am using for power on the svideo connection to make sure they wern't shared with a meter...

It is working pretty well but I think I will change to a KVM and see how that works.  They make one button switching KVM's so that might be a nice touch.

Here's some more work.  I got the inside portion of the side panels covered with Vinyl and the T-molding slot routed out.  Also some more testing on the CPO, I printed this before moving the start button to the left side.  The CPO is my least favorite of all my graphics... :dunno :dunno

Here is my Galaga side of the Bezel.  A lot of it is best guess and kind of my own creation to match the Ms. Pacman side...

Thanks for all the positive comments, it really drives me to work on this!

Whats your thoughts on that vinyl as far as durability? I decided to use paint instead of laminate of any kind, but I wondered how much I would've liked the partsexpress vinyl.

It seems great.  I am using the parts express vinyl mainly because I had an entire roll that I hadn't used.  It also look better than any paint that I could put on there.  Most of it will be double coated with Vinyl, one will be the parts express base and the other will be the vinyl overlays of the artwork.  The inside I did in vinyl as well just to keep it clean/consistent.

I am still working on the Galaga part of the bezel as I don't like what I have...
