| Paul's Modular Control Panel |

| Paul Olson:
I am having a new cabinet built, and it will have a different panel mounting method than I am currently using. That will make this control panel box pretty much useless for me. I will be reusing the actual controls, but the box with the patch panel, and a bunch of blank panels are available if someone wants it. I am in Reno, NV, and it really isn't worth shipping, but if someone wants it and can come pick it up, it is yours. I have no use for it, so it will go in the trash if no one can use it. |

Still waiting on a lot of the panels to be completed, but this is what the cabinet looks like now. The picture below that is just a sample of the new panels. |

Still a lot of work left to do, but I am finally making progress. I have around 50 panels now, and all but 15 of those are mounted and wired up. I am getting ready to place my final order of panels, which will add about 20 more. With any luck, I will have this project finally completed in a month. Here is the first pic with a full contoller layout and one showing the sides lit up. Putting that Roadblasters panel on the cab stopped production for a weekend while I played. :) |

I just got the last order of panels in on Friday, so now it is time to get to work on the rest of this. I ended up with 61 controller panels and 8 blank panels. The breakdown is: 8 blank (2 4" endcaps, 2 2.5" endcaps, 2 4" spacers, 2 7" spacers) 11 Button (2 6 button, 2 2 button, 2 1 button, 2 Neo Geo, Defender, Missile Command, Donkey Kong) 26 joystick (2 4-way wico, 2 atari logo, Defender, Donkey Kong, 2 49-way, 2 joust, 2 karate champ, monroe, Mr Do, Pacman, 2 rotary, Sinistar, Tapper, 2 wico 360, 2 wico 8-way 4", 720, Analog Trigger, Tron) 2 spinner (Tempest and Tron) 3 start (Center start buttons, Left side start buttons, and the middle of the Defender layout) 3 trackball (2 3", 1 4") 8 unique (Paperboy, Enduro Racer, GP Rider, Space Harrier, Spy Hunter, Star Wars, Boot Hill, Road Blasters) 5 wheel (3 optical, 1 analog, one full Cart Fury CP with force feedback) 2 shifters (1 2 speed, 1 4 speed) 1 throttle I am wiring up the remaining button panels now, then I will start mounting the rest of the joysticks. I have posted pics of my closet storage area before, and I am starting to face the reality that there will not be enough room in there for everything. I will probably end up storing the overflow on the main shelves in my office. I will still have a lot of left over parts that I decided not to use. I could have easily done another 50 panels, and there would still have been some compromises. I decided it just wasn't worth it right now. I can always add more later if I really want to, but I think this will cover the games I really care about. I just looked at the date on this thread. In 6 weeks, this project will be 7 years old! That sounds like a good goal for finishing it up. At least the hardware part. I may tinker with the software for quite a while yet. There were two main reasons for this redesign: I wanted to use a big TV instead of an arcade monitor, and I wanted to be able to play Super Sprint with all 3 wheels. Everything else was taken care of by the old design. I have posted this pic in other threads, but I am adding it to this thread as well. Most of the posts for a while will most likely be pics of the different control layouts as I get them finished. |
