Hey Artifact,

Thanks from me also.  I too have most of the components done already, but I'm sure I can use a few of yours! :)  I'll too be posting all my Sketchup plans for my project when its nearer to being complete!

I wanted to make sure I add another hat tip to Artifact. I have modeled my conversion cabinet in sketchup so I could build a new CP, and make other modifications as necessary. With your models, I will save a lot of time on the CP - thanks!

I will post my plans as well, once I have the new CP designed. Since there is no hat tipping smiley, have a  :applaud: and a .

Thanks!

A few months later, the ARTIFACT GAME MUSEUM standup arcade machine is performing flawlessly!!!

My 5 year old and a friend, enjoying it a ton - the MALA menu is totally awesome... ALL controlled from the joysticks and trackball... NO maintenance / troubleshooting... it really feels like a dedicated "appliance" now.

He rocks at Ms Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and many others...

One great game I recommend is TETRIS ATTACK on SNES...
Excellent 2 player game, great for kids AND adults.
Oh, and the JURASSIC PARK game (lightgun)... For kids, just enable the infinite lives cheat, and they just LOVE the ride thru all the dinosaurs... My kid just uses the trackball and shoots like crazy :)

Take care guys... Anyone using my SKETCHUP PLAN / COMPONENTS yet?

Woah.. Time flies

Something fun:
I threw out the real coin mechs (which jammed coins all the time) and built new ones with.... LEGO! I don't have pictures yet, but essentially I assembled a chute and fastened the coin mech's microswitch (the swinging metal bar kind). It works like a charm! ... I made this new chute system drop the coin in the RETURN area. This is perfect for me as I don't need a "bucket" anyway. My 6 year old loves dropping the coin again and again (so do I :))

Something not so fun:
Apparently something happened to my IPAC2 wiring, and I FRIED 2 MOTHERBOARDS! The cab worked fine for almost 2 years, 1 button operation, kids using it non-stop. Then BOOM and re-BOOM a second PC thrown in. Time to wire up the CP again from scratch, and throw in a new PC.

The design is still super BTW... No complaints at all, so if you want to build a replica model (see my sketchup plans) you can do so with peace of mind. There is plenty of space for 2 players (and folks around cheering!!), height is perfect, fits a large monitor. The whole cab is still fairly compact.

Take care everyone :) I thought I'd post this update

Thank you all for the kind words!

I will try to post pictures of my LEGO-made Coin Mech soon :) ... pretty amazing what you can do with LEGO. At first I use those to "try" my "coin chute to return door" - a prototype - but soon realized that it was as good as any other material.

Also when I re-wire the CP (IPAC2, Trackball, spinner, 2x U360), I will document that as well.

I'll make a cool video when it all works again :)

Hi Artifact,

I have tried downloading the Sketchup files but neither links work. Maybe they need to be updated?

Thanks!

Not sure what's going on...

If there is an issue, it's with the site/forum software, not my files or the way they were attached.

I can't DL them either in Internet Explorer - I tried in Firefox and it works. WEIRD

SOmeone should ask this site's owner - the files are there, they work fine, its probably a bug with the forum software

super busy at the moment - this should work...

Artifact, what kind of birch plywood did you use? Veneer core or is it a combi-core (veneer and MDF ply's)?

I don't think there was a choice... I don't see any MDF i there, so it is probably Veneer core.

It is HEAVY but looks and feels so solid and great...

It was $35 a piece, and I used 3 pieces I think for the whole project - I actually still have some to spare

Artifact

My favourite project by far...

Quick question

You say you find the height of the control panel to be spot on. I believe you are using 3" castors.

May I ask how tall you are? I am 5' 10" - If we are of similar height your side panel dimensions wouldn't
need much tweaking in my design.

I am 1m 75cm I believe - I don't do feet/inches (which was TOUGH when building the Artifact Game Museum BTW :) )

Yes and my 7 year old boy can play too... we have a stool for the kids otherwise

Not sure the TV angle (it's a musltisynch 27" monitor BTW not a TV - got it free from a local TV editor who was moving to LCD/digital)

Funny I am actually typing this post from the PC I amjst setting up for the arcade machine :) ... I burned 2 computers (mainly hard drives after all) due to some CP wiring apparently... going to re-wire it all carefully (a pain!!!)

Take care everyone

Amazing project, really love everything about it

Would you be willing to share the art files?

I totally understand if you don't want to, to keep yours original and unique, but I think its fantastic and would like to use them if you don't mind.

Many thanks for sharing such an excellent and informative build

Hi ARTIFACT

I got into sketchup after seeing your fantastic project log about a year and a half ago.

I imported your side panel design thinking it would be a nice template
for me to begin with but no matter what I did I couldn't seem to improve on
it!

I ended up having to angle the back slightly due to the base dimensions but that's it.

Project is not finished by any means but there are some Sketchup pics...

Cheers

I think your project is brilliant, especially the CLEAR plexiglass skin/exterior idea. I love seeing good woodworking skills at work, and those angle joints are way cool. I'll be following your progress!

ARTIFACT DETAILS
I built a custom coin mechanism with............... LEGO... Fastening microswitch to the TECHNIC holes etc.

It works brilliantly. What it does is return the coin when you put it in the top slot.
I made it so my kids stopped asking me for more quarters :) ... It's like having a button credit, but with the COIN DROP FEEL.

I am planning to take some cool HD videos of ARTIFACT in action, including the LEGO Coin Mechanism... Stay tuned :)

Hey!

I can't believe I have not come back to this thread in over a YEAR!
Sure thing, that's what the files I posted are for. Any updates / pics?

Anyone else using my sketchup plans? Those should be super useful for anyone wanting to build a cab, at least to learn how Sketchup works etc.

News: I am working on upgrading some components (monitor, computer, frontend, etc).

Heyyyyy woooooo happy to read this! Mine is still going strong. I actually just took out the aging mega-loud P4 computer and replaced it with a modded XBOX running CoinOps among other things. Works like a charm. Although seeing how much power the new dirt-cheap Raspberry Pi 2 has, it won't be long until our huge arcade machines have the electronics almost disappear :)

Send me your thread link and make sure to document!! I am glad I created a thread to log my progress daily, looking at it now is a lot of fun.

Take care!

Artifact:  was going to PM you, but your answer will probably help others, so I decided to revive this kinda-old thread.

In the 2010 "Hall of Fame Worthy" thread you wrote:

"wire coin return button to the motherboard's POWER switch, Smart Strip to turn everything else on"

Wiring to a coin return button is a very elegant/discreet way of turning on the PC, one I hadn't seen mentioned before.
Once the PC is on, do you then turn it off by holding the eject/corn return button down longer?  [Or are you shutting it down in software, maybe?]  I'm worried that it's on, a kid pushes the coin return, makes momentary contact, and turns odf the computer.  Desktop PCs you usually have to hold the power button down for several seconds before it turns off, so I'm assuming it works the same way after you tap into the power switch?

Love your cabinet, btw.
