Well, I have officially learned today that I am NOT a techie.

There is a report that some people opened up, and managed to break, their new $400 to $500 iPhone, just to see what makes the sucker tick.

My wife would absolutely leave me in a heartbeat if I did something like that, if she didn't kill me first.  Apparently none of these people have families they have to take care of.  Sorry, you'll never make me understand this one, so don't hand me "they can afford it" as an excuse.  This is just silly.

Well I guess they didn't set out to break it. Personally I don't open a device unless it's broken or obsolete, but I have to admit it's fun to open them up.

Personally I don't see the deal about the iPhone.

MikeQ:
Hi is this any different than most of us spending $500, $1000, $2000 to build an arcade machine when you can buy an X-box or Wii for much cheaper?

With great risk comes great reward...

They may be "Seeing what it takes to make it tick" or they could be doing any number of other things. For example:

* Wanting to hack the device so it can be used as a small touchscreen for various applications (GPS, Jukebox, Etc.)This would make a cool device to install in a car to play videos, GPS and MP3 player
* Wanting to see if they can install a different OS. Once a different OS is installed they could use the device for nearly anything else they would like.
* Who knows? Point is, this device could be useful in a lot of other areas.
Just about anytime a new device comes out, there is a race to open the device or format. Look at DVD John. There is a certain amount of fame/notoriety attached to this. You may not understand how someone could break a $500 device, but I personally can't understand how someone can waste money on cigarettes, beer, or motorcycles. Thats my opinion and I respect other peoples hobbies to know that what they do for fun is their own business.

One last thing... If my wife wanted to leave me over a broken $500 device - I'd hold the door open for her and kick her ass down the steps.

also at least one of the groups that did it, were doing it to get a detailed picture of the cost to manufacturer it. they look at every single component to do that.

apparently one guy smashed one with a hammer on youtube. THAT, i must admit is stupid...
