Mortal kombat resto
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:32:14 am »
I just bought an original mortal kombat cab. The person who sold me it told me it was missing the board. And he wasn't sure about power or the monitor working, so he sold it very cheap.

Here are the pics if the inside. This is my first go at restoring a cab our working with arcades in general.

Can someone please tell me what I'm missing to make this functional to the point i can see if monitor and everything else works.

Thanks

it *looks* like all the wiring is there, do you have any jamma boards to plug in and test?  I'd like to see pics of the outside too

Ok...so update time.

I bought a new PCB with soundboard off of ebay. I get it, plug it in and it doesn't work.

So then I tackle the arcade power supply...which was shot..so I ordered a new one. Got that it, plugged it in, set the voltages and fired it up! Lo and behold it worked!!

Here are two questions I have now, and hopefully someone can help.

The monitor is very testy sometimes, where it will get distorted and scroll up. If I hit the control panel it stops. The longer I had the machine on, it stopped and the screen was normal.

Second, the low kick and low punch, bottom two buttons on both players does not work. All other buttons and movements work perfectly, just those two bottom buttons on each player side. Any ideas on this one?? I went back to check where the wires terminated on the jamma harness. If you look at the pictures I posted above,  you'll see 4 wires that have black electrical tape on them. Those are the 4 wires to the buttons in question. I tried to get two of them set up with wire nuts, but it still didn't work. Im going to go tomorrow to Radio Shack and pick up the real male to female connectors and see if that helps.

Thanks!!

bottom buttons plug into the kick harness, not part of the jamma connector. You can try to adjust the vertical hold on the monitor instead of hitting hte control panel. If that doesnt fix it, it might need a cap kit.

You'll probably want to do a cap kit on the monitor... this is the recommended first step in any monitor repair and a good idea if you want the monitor to run well and you don't know the history.

First you'll need to figure out what monitor chassis you have (that "chassis" is the monitor PCB) , look for manufacturer or part number markings on the board, or failing that there are sites that show pictures of different chassis  so you can see which one looks like yours. I's a good idea to post up pics and try to get confirmation from several sources.

Once you know the chassis you can buy a cap kit, these kits for about $5-$10 and basically include replacements for all of the capacitors on the chassis along with a list of all the included caps and their location.

Once you've got the cap kit in you can remove the chassis by first unplugging the machine and safely discharging the flyback (you need to buy or build a tool for discharging the flyback, its really just a long screwdriver with a wire attached so they're cheap/easy to build) There are lots of video guides on youtube for this... I recommend you watch a couple of them.

I also recommend taking picture of all the connectors on the chassis so you have a reference as to where everything goes.

Once the chassis has been removed you'll basically need to go one by one removing (desoldering) the old caps and installing (soldering) the new caps. It's a good idea to double check the the capacitor value you're removing with the one you're installing with the value on the list (sometimes there are slight differences).  It's kind of tedious but it's really basic soldering technique and your monitor will usually be a lot brighter and sharper once you're done.

If that's too much for you there are people who will do cap kits for you, but you'll probably end up spending about $50 plus shipping both ways, as opposed to about $10-$15  to do it yourself.

Thanks for all the help! So after reading the Mortal Kombat manual. I know what you mean about the kick harness. I guess whoever owned this before tried to splice the bottom buttons into the NC slots on the jamma.

There is no 12 pin molex that I need in this cabinet. Where can I buy the molex 12 pin that I need?

Once I get this figured out, I'll move onto the monitor.

Thanks again for all the help!

Here are two pics. The first one shows another hold switch on the back of the video card. Is this switch causing my issues?

The second pic is the labels on the video card chassis should i need to get a Cap kit.

I read the mk manual and all i need is the 12 pin molex. All the wiring is done from the cp.....so is rather just buy the molex rather than the kick harness.

Thanks again for the help

yup with a 25"tube, factory standard for an MK. I think I see the angled fronts took, so most likely a dedicated Mk1 cab. That being said, I think the molex connector and the kick harness are one in the same. If you could post a pic of your MK board, it'd be a huge help to me.
