The earlier OSes were a graphical interface built on top of a DOS platform. It can be argued that Win95/98 aren't even OSes but very fancy applications that run in DOS. WindowsXP is an actual OS and is not DOS based. Microsoft threw in a DOS emulator which you can run to start up command line programs, but because it doesn't run on DOS, there is no way to get a "DOS-only" version of XP, or boot to DOS etc. XP is simply not built that way. If you want / need to run pure DOS, boot into DOS etc, you need to go back to Win98. |
