I have resolved the CP labeling blues. Elementary really. Use the Klingon alphabet. The benefits are two fold

1. If they don't know klingon, they won't know it's upside down
2. If they do know klingon, they won't mind if it's upside down

I'm thinking most folks will fall into the #1 category. You can thank me now if you like.  ;)

This is really looking like it is going to turn out nice.  Now get busy on the artwork so you can close up this bad boy.

Be on the lookout for a new announcement thread from me in the next week or two. >:D

Oh, well :)

leapinlew: that's just it! Thank you so very much  :notworthy: .. Do you accept cheques..?

 :laugh2:

Still, that's an awesome solution ...for someone else's Star Trek dedicated cabinet ;)

Kaytrim: Thanks! The more I get done the less "graphics" the CP seems to need.. We'll see? And as it happens the machine is closed as I'm writing this. Far from ready, but closed for the very first time (1980's Madonna...).

Still have to install quite a load of software and stuff and make all the software and the remote control speak the same language, etc. etc.

You can count on that. I'll be lurking somewhere stage left ..as always :)

Anyway, thank you both for the comments on the project. Might even get something done this way  ??? Maybe.

One small update on the project:

Psychotic? Every other progress picture shows a different machine.. Anyway, this time it's a Pinball W.I.P. I'll replace the red side PB with a black one.

Alternatively: Look, no hands (Look, no brains ;) )

Sidetracked ..BIG time.

In no hurry to finish the main control panel...

............

Back in the middle/late 1990's when not all the ("cheap") PC's were able to play DVD titles with only their CPU power I had this decoder board with a remote control unit.. and I never threw it away even after it grew obsolete.

Ten years later: Jukebox/Pinball. Yeah, no use for the decoder board, but.. add PC Remote Control (http://www.pcremotecontrol.com/info.html) & the old RealMAGIC RC/receiver combo..

The RC software is quite easy to set up, at least on Win98SE.. So. I'm all wireless now*. And it all actually works :)

At the moment I've set up the machine to start with Mala and SK Jukebox. Full controll of all the jukebox features (plays all music & video files I've tried, so far..).  If I quit the juke I'm back at the main MaLa interface, with options to start MAME/Visual Pinball or the Jukebox ..or to watch movies/concert videos, etc.

* On the first announcement post I listed a wireless FM transmitter. Maybe I should have written "a wireless RADIO transmitter" instead ;) ? At the moment all the audio comes out of my main amplifier/receiver set - no wires. Maybe all this (FM/RC) has already been done to death, but still..

Later. On the air..

Why not have someone make some of those funky designs that can be read either way... like in Angels & Demons or something...  I think they are called ambigrams...

javeryh: Great idea ..And bfauska's idea looks really cool too..
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=67842.msg702478#msg702478

If there's more interest in ambigrams, this site might be useful: http://ambigram.matic.com/ambigram.htm

But, javeryh, as you've seen my builds before, you know I really like to build (and design/hack) my own arcade controls and everything related. This way, if I fail miserably ..I've got only myself to blame >:D Actually, the button txt's etc. are already done, I'm just not sure about the graphics under them...  ..still, I'm an ass and so, will do the CP the old fashioned way ..

Thank you for your interest, anyway

Gray on black, black on gray, gray surrounded with black...

Anyway, it won't be nothing much. Something simple. And the YELLOW thumbstick will ruin everything anyway  :'(

-> Yellow thumbstick -> yellow buttons for MAME. (L-R)
-> Red buttons for numerics...

Maybe...

I can't read these no matter which way I turn my head.

If I can't read it - it might as well be Klingon.

Where's your color courage?
Oh, hmm, uh, wellllll ...So, I'm a color coward  :dunno ;)

Tomatocade; Red on red with just a bit more red.
Bombjack; Blue on blue with just a bit more blue ..and then some more blue.
So, a black jukebox and..? - There actually is a Dalbello album in the juke with a song named Black on Black ;)

Ambigrams, cool stuff when professionally done, otherwise.. I'll let someone else be the first one to use them on their machine :)

Anyway, instead of finishing the juke, I'm now trying to come up with "creative" uses of all the scrap pieces I've lying around from all these (3) builds so far.. Nothing arcade related, maybe..

Just a cheap mock-up this time. (No access to my ISP at the moment)

The main CP might (will?) be something alike, but at the moment I'm not sure if I really like it.. (Too much etc..)

Still, I just had to do a mock-up to see how it (would) could turn out. All the True Metal will come out through the

speakers/connectors/transmitter, maybe someday soon?

Just had to get back to page one :)

Questions, comments, ideas?!

;)

So, the post above was not only cheap, but cheap & nasty :)

Still, another couple of pictures of the CP W.I.P. - Converting from 300dpi (roughly 7700 pixels horizontal etc.) to 72dpi (400 pixels horizontal) for web really works ..NOT!

The parts pictured here actually have quite detailed surfaces (lighting/texture/etc.). Hope these pics don't look as GD'd awful.. ;)

Part of the probable main jukebox control panel:

And the eye (Ball) that still needs some tweaking... (The remote control receiver will be centered under it.)

A work in process..

Hell. O.

Same old **i* in a different package. No real progress, only more color cowardice  :o

At least I managed to place an order for a control panel layout..

Jukebox:

Tried to strip the graphics down as much I could, but the arch on the juke's top, as stupid as it actually looks, just kept on coming back... for it might actually look almost good when the cab is used as a pinball machine..

Pinball:

Just needs to be "seen/visualized" in 3D ..

A sunburst 1967 Gibson Les Paul, no? :)

Might just as well frame that..

The Eye of Ra. Behind a 1mm plexi to .. "If you have to ask, you'll never know".

(W)hole Lotta Rosie ?

..and the frame.

..the man behind the mask

So, ..so?

Pictures of the MaLa FE in no particular order:

M.A.M.E.

Movies

Jukebox ..?

Concert videos ..from Kylie to Slayer, go figure  :dizzy:

Pinball ..old tables only @ the moment (ATI gfx...)

While not entirely happy with the main CP graphics, the MaLa screens I almost do like. So, not all is lost. Might have to design another CP overlay later on and should really add snaps of the videos and something alike for the jukebox...?

Might remove the "Moving Pictures" and just add more music & videos instead. Even though there is a DVI out on the juke, I'm not so sure the feature would get much use?

Anyway, that's where I'm at at the moment. Should be done in ..the future :)

just wanted to mention that in future pinball, you can change camera views. some are cool, like following the ball. so that as a button may be a good idea. also, some pin tables dont add a ball to the table like the rest. some add the ball through a side chamber wich is a different key. you either may want a button for that or somehow combine the key with the other.

Thanks for the info Kangum, but actually this machine runs on Win98SE and does only Visual Pinball. On the other hand, not all the tables on VP either work with the "normal" keys.. well, shift/Shazaaam! works with those bas..rd tables too :)

Good info for future reference

Yeah great original stuff on the MaLa layout.

Have you considered generating slightly different versions of your layout, to change per emulator?  That way you could adjust the font size for your movies / videos / whathaveyou so more of it is readable - but still keep it nice and big for pinball and MAME.  Also you could use a bigger snap for Pinball since they're all horizontal, and obscure a corner or side of it like you have in that MAME version above with D Kong.

I like where this is headed - you make great cabs :)

Thanks for all the comments and ideas !

Kaytrim: Well, I did say/write that I might have to design another CP overlay later on.. But, as it is, I wish you could see (and hear) what I do as I'm writing this.. Think it's done, ever seen a 600x495mm CP with a shiny plexi over it?! 3D & real world == Me happy :) Pix later.

theCoder: I was actually going for the old camera shutter design, but that seemed a bit too busy, so..? See above.. ;)

shock_: Thanks for the comment/suggestion! I'll do that, and it'll be easy too. Other than centering the layouts I won't change them too much; I'll just change the MAME & Visual Pinball screens to have bigger snaps and give the concert names a bit more room.. (Might have to fix that screen layout a bit..) Anyway, not a problem -> layered PSD's - a quick fix. PS. Kool MaLa UI's

And, the "Moving Pictures" option has to go. No use for it..?

The machine is almost done at the moment, just have to decide on the Mame games.. (4-ways only with this thumbstick.)

------------------------------------

A couple of WIP pictures:

Jukebox numerics soldered..

Main CP soldered & hot glued (Yes, it is the GGG no solder ST!)

The CP. Much better than the mock-up and still much better live :) The speaker holes' (upper) sides were painted silver to match the main CP design..

Final pictures in the near future?

Still..

Thank U all very much for the kind comments   :dunno

I'm away from home at the moment, but will try and take pictures of the machine in a few days' time..

Kaytrim: Thanks, see above sentence ..and good luck with the Kustoms

superbigjay: Thanks, and the black buttons are all of the same variety I've already used on Tomatocade and Bombjack. Ordered them from a local (Finnish) electronics retailer for the unsightly price of 1.20€ (something like $1.65) apiece. theCoder asked the same question earlier on the Bombjack thread, take a closer look @ http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=61679.msg647239#msg647239 - I'm sure you'll find them "a bit" nearer..?

Did theCoder search/find/buy or actually use similar buttons anywhere?

theCoder: Thank you. Turned out quite nice in the end?! Eh, did you actually search/find/use those mini buttons or similar superbigjay asked about?

Knievel: Once again, thank you. Not bad, even if I say so myself.. for that mock-up really turned out to be an abomination and almost made me to start from scratch. And, well.. full-scale production starts the day someone actually offers (enough) money for an original jukebox/cabinet. So, do NOT hold your breath  :laugh2:

:) Back in a few days.

Sooner than I thought.. final pictures of the Pinbox/Jukeball.

Cameras & psychotech == disaster.

I'm all against this, but this time it'll have to be quantity over quality. So, suffer  >:D

Jukebox:

Yes, a small jukebox:

In place, with the remote controller

Won't stay in place..

So, who was that Loudness vocalist back in 1985?

Quantity over quality.. Told you already.

Main admin "panel" ..talk about faux anything....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh, it does both; Country & Western...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pinball:

Just say it's not hot and I'll turn on the heat..

Correct me if needed, but I'm pretty sure this is the optimal view..?

Well, that's Space..something table on Visual Pinball. Never give me a camera - I won't know what to do with it.

Hey, it's Dolly Parton! And someone just opened the DVD-drive tray with Species in.. WTF?!

----

And then some. Forgot to take pictures of the MAME screens and stuff, but then again, they're just like in the pictures above (those are actual screen captures at 1280/1024) ..no harm done?

Still. No good pictures. It's either that cameras suck, I suck on cameras or the subject matter sucks.. or..?

Anyway, I'll redo the FE GFX's later on etc. (Option to bump the thread in a few months ;) )

Thank you all for the interest and all the comments, ideas & encouragement. I'll promise to do better next time.

Thanks mcfreak!

There's no business like no business ?

Anyway.

--------------------------------------------------

Another small update :)

A really bad picture of the, ...pinball :)

That orange peel effect on the cp/overlay is actually just a reflection of the ceiling and the MaLa layout is not "blue" but gray/silver, as in the above screen captures, in real life. Damn these LCD's  :banghead: Anyway, here's one of the (old/original) layouts "live".

Over & out, for now.

Regarding small buttons, there are the cheap Radio Shack ones (I've stripped out the threads on 3 or 4).  There are also the miniature ones that you put small plug caps on.  I've decided to go with traditional sized buttons (chrome ringed from: http://www.ultimarc.com/ultralux.html) for my current project.  I wish someone would make a 1/2 size button of the same form factor as regular arcade buttons.

Congratulations on yet another bartop.  This one is your best one yet.  I feel compelled to ask if you have got a copy of pro-pinball loaded on there.

?!

I've been asked "a couple" of times about the miniature buttons I've used on all my builds. So far it's been like "Eh, well, ..you might find them at X..?"

Now, add csa3d. Thank you very, very much!

The buttons I've used seem to be exactly like the HAPP Miniature Momentary Contact Pushbuttons, type A.

So, there you have it :) Good luck with all your builds

this very well could be a very dumb question. From a woodworking stand point, how do you hold down the front panels to the juke? i don't see screw holes on the front?

Hello!

this very well could be a very dumb question. From a woodworking stand point, how do you hold down the front panels to the juke? i don't see screw holes on the front?

No dumb questions here

Still...

Hiding in plain sight? Seems to work as planned :)

Actually, all the panels are screwed (from the outside) into the 28mm supports glued & screwed to the sides (also from outside).. Just take a closer look and you'll see screws :(  (See previous posts/whole thread..)

All(most all) the screw heads on the black (front/bottom/back) panels are countersunked and were finally ("blackened") touched up with a Pentel "permanent marker"..

And, really, there are six (6) big screws holding the main control panel (all the four layers of it) in place in all the pictures. I did not even try to hide them.. So,  I take it that the silver/gray on black design seems to make the screw heads quite imperceptible / a part of the design.. no?

Three per side..

Thanks for asking and good luck with all your builds

Your work on this unit is magnificent.  Even professiional equipment does not seem to reach the level that you have produced.  Your artistic eye and attention to detail make all your projects top notch.   :applaud: :applaud:
