One of my buddies has a show champion '74 Nova that he does not allow ANYONE to sit in the passenger seat - not even his girlfriend.

Did you live in Sea-Town when Dana Barrows used to play for the Sonics? He drove a black supra with a frigging HUGE wing on it...you always knew when you saw his car.....couldn't miss it. I'm not a big fan of aftermarket wings however...I like my cars STOCK....(except maybe wheels)

I had an '89 for a while (until I finally accepted the fact that it was a bottomless money pit). Not quite the same, but still fun. There's a sweet '90s-one in the parking lot where I work - I need to meet the owner.
I didn't move here until after college in '94, so no on Dana. I did see Sam Perkins at Southcenter once, though... :D And I hate those giant wings on the back. I think they look really stupid.

It's still a Supra. I would think an NBA player, especially someone that tall, would want more of a status symbol.

Well, first of all, Dana Barros (I misspelled it above, no W) was TINY for an NBA player @ only 5' 11". H drove a MkIV supra pretty much from the day they hit the states, and of course it was a twin turbo model.
Sure, it was still "just" a toyota supra, but this was right in the thick of the escalation of the non-exotic sports car race-> supra MK IV, RX-7 GenIII, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX, etc. These were former "affordable" sports cars that were now pushing $50-100k rather than their initial target of sub $30k.
And Dana's didn't have the huge stock wing, it had an aftermarket F1 type...VERY ugly. Before that car, he drove a 300ZX with a gargantuan wing too.....I hate aftermarket wings.
I totally agree with MikeQ about the 308, DeLorean, and some other older "exotics" being as much a nostalgia thing than a performance car thing. Sure, they ARE fun to drive (I've driven several older ferraris and other older sports cars), but a modern moderately performance car will outperform most of them. Heck, my IS250RWD probably accelerates and handles better than many 80's era sports cars, but it doesn't have the same cool factor to it. The most fun car I've ever driven was a De Tomaso Pantera....thing was a total pig to drive, and at 3000lbs+ it handled like one too. But damn it was fun 8)
