We did the list thing too.  The DJ thoroughly ignored the list and played all the traditional crap we didn't want to hear.  I think we heard every song Meatloaf ever recorded.

I hope that DJ didn't get a tip!

ChadTower:

We bought a package deal with the reception hall (a very large restaurant) that was supposed to supply the photographer, DJ, and various other things as part of the package price.  I don't think any of them listened to any of our instructions.  If the DJ got tipped it sure wasn't by me.

mpm32:
Our DJs were freinds of my wife that were also DJs at the local college station.  My band also played and I did a song for my wife with some of my other friends.

We had none of that traditional crap, no chicken dance, no electric slide or any of those other crap 'dance' songs. No bride cuts the cake, no garder belt BS.  Just mostly new wave/alternative.  12 years later people still talk about it as one of the best weddings they've been to.

For our reception, I amassed a collection of songs that me and the wife preferred, then made a playlist to keep a good mixture of music going non-stop. I also created another playlist of the "required" songs (dad dance, mom dance, etc.) At the reception I set up my laptop connected to a nice stereo setup. When a required song was needed, one of my groomsmen would switch playlists for a song, then go back to the general playlist. This worked awesome. We got the music we wanted when we wanted it, we saved money, and the quality of music/sound was very good.

Try to hit a couple songs at least from each generation.  I will always get out of my chair and dance for "Love Shack" by the B-52's, or "Mustang Sally".  Also everyone always wants to hear a sappy father/daughter song, try "Daddy's Girl" by Peter Cetera.  There won't be a woman in the room not crying!  Your parents or grandparents will appreciate a little Chuck Berry or Bo Diddly.  I had my DJ play "You Are So Beautiful" and "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker.  You already know what you like, so the key is to get a little bit of what everyone older/younger likes.
