Definitive 4-way vertical list
« on: April 18, 2003, 02:22:10 am »
I am trying to determine a definitive list of games that are use vertical monitors AND play correctly with a 4-way joystick with a maximum of two buttons. I used sortinfo.exe to help out a bit with the list, but that thing has so much incorrect information that all it really ended up being good for was getting rid of the clones and the horizontal games (since EVERYTHING with a 2-way is listed as 8-way, and tons of 4-way games are listed as 8-way as well).

Here is what I am going for in this list.

Game must use a vertical screen, and be fully playable with a 4-way joystick with two buttons.
Game must not use analogue controls (Arkanoid is fully playable with a 4-way, but it sucks that way).
Games must have working sound.
Originals only, no clones (Only exceptions are Pac-Man instead of PuckMan, and I included New Rally-X (Vertical screen).

Here is the list I have. Am I missing anything? Do I have anything included that doesn't work right, or has no sound, or otherwise doesn't match up to my list above? I want everything on this cab to play perfectly, and I don't want any problem games.

Ali Baba and 40 Thieves

Also, I wouldn't mind being warned of any of these games that are just so bad that no one should be wasting their time on them. I see a lot of old favorites on that list, but then there is a lot of stuff that I have never heard of too. (Guzzler, Marvin's Maze, Mr. Jong, etc).

I liked your question because no one seems to use the advanced filtering options of lazarus and this is a perfect example of something it would save time for.

So think of this as an answer/lazarus tutorial on filtering.  :)

To get the answer to your question we would make a vdir entry that looks like this:

[path]
logo=
caption=Definitive 4-way vertical list
useclones=0
searchstrings:11=*joy4way*;0=pacman;0=nrallyv
filters:9=*status preliminary*;9=*sound preliminary*;10=*orientation horizontal*;11=*buttons 4*;11=*buttons 5*;11=*buttons 6*
[/path]

What all that junk means is we start with all 4way parent games (plus pacman and new rally v)  and then start filtering off the crap we don't want, like non working games and games with bad sound ect....

Now you can either run it on lazarus yourself or just let me know and i'll post the list it generates. :)

The reason I brought this up is of all the fe's currently released (sorry sirp)  only a very few can do such advanced filtering.  When you need very specific lists then Laz is the only way to go imho.  This will be enhanced even more in Laz Dx.  Of course I'm just a tad biased.  ;)

The only problem is that I assume your frontend uses the MAME information as to what is joy4way and what is joy8way.

That information is largely incorrect (For example, Donkey Kong is listed as a joy8way). Your filter string there would miss about 20 vertical 4-way games that MAME lists as 8way, and about 30 2-way games that are listed as 8way.

I don't have Lazarus yet but I was liking the look of it, and was planning on checking that out first.

Which is really cool and why filtering is going in my FE and in which I have yet to think how to implement it:)  My filtering is different, since I don't rely on lists or virtual directory.  I rely on categories from catver.  You can set up the filter which will affect all the categories.  Favorite lists will not be affected.

For you naysayers, an update on my FE.  Since the redesign, my friend who is doing the graphics is researching newer features of flash mx to see what we can take advantage of before we get too far into building it.  MX is suppose to have dynamic grapgic support, but I think for only png.  Now, you think to yourself, hey, I'd have to convert my images from png to jpeg.  Yes, you would!  I will have a utility to do that otherwise.  Be happy, it's better than what the old system did if we get it to work.  The old system converted to swfm but had to convert to jpeg first.  No on on the flash dev newsgroups was kinda enough to say how to convert png to swf.  One almost did, saying png had to be put into a lossless object in flash then converted, but didn't say how to do that exactly.  I think that was a ultility called mingw.

Was that second list supposed to be a vertical list? A lot of those games are horizontal. It is also missing all the 2-way games. They may have got the Donkey Kongs right  in the latest info, but there is still a ton of bad info.

Filters are only as useful as the information they are filtering, and when that info is bad, then they aren't very useful either.

Where is Nibbler on that list (or my list EEK!)?

Until controls.dat is available this is imposible.

You didn't say you wanted 2way games, you said you wanted 4way games.  To do a 2way list I would have to add a 2way entry.  :)

But you can't search for 2ways in mame.

Also, again, I don't see Pac-Man, There is pacland and pac plus but no pacman in your list.

Yes you can it's just the 2 games aren't always listed properly (sometimes they are 4 way)

But since he wants both two ways and 4 ways it doesn't matter.

Also regarding the exact filter.... bite me sirp.  I was just trying to help here.  :P

I know, but you specified pacman directly in the searchstring.  Just wondering why it didn't come up?  bug?

Not sure, maybe....

If it is then it's an odd bug as it only seems to effect pacman.  Notice that newrally showed up.

Paigeoliver,

I went through this for my cocktail, as well (BTW, thanks Howard - your list picked up quite a few that I missed).
To complicate things, there are few 'classics' that call for 8-ways that are more than acceptable with 4-ways that will enhance your satisfaction with your cab.  Only one comes to mind at the moment (Journey - classic to me, at least <grin>).

The good new is that the vertical-only list is a pretty good start in itself!

I have confirmed a wierd pacman-related bug as sirp had guessed.  I wish to fix this (because surely it effects more) and then I will post a better list.

I am considering making a new panel and putting an 8-way on there next to the 4-way (like I have on my horizontal cabinet). I have plenty of room, since I am still using the original panel with has a 4-way on one side and 2 buttons on the other.

Want to have my 4-way + 2-way games (both horisontal and vertical) automated upon launch, but cant find a good way to do this  :dizzy:

Romlister is a great tool for that, i made a similar list for hyperspin with that.  Together with the old jeepguy81 files, makes it for a nice vertical front end.

Just change the txt extention to xml if you wanna use it.
