The neat thing about safest stripper is that it only acts on the top layer. You put it on generously with a brush and then wipe it off in an hour or two with paper towels. The only place local I could find it though was Ace Hardware.

Definitely try what Sharidan is recommending, or you can buy acetone in any paint store-  just wipe it VERY lightly on where the black is...  check the paper towel you apply it with and you'll see the black coming off onto it.  Just be VERY careful..  And I know I used Lysol kitchen cleaner on mine in places, but it's been a year ago now so I'm thinking it might have been to clean off some of the other "mystery" textures I had on mine   :(

I would not recommend using Acetone. That is an intense chemical that can damage your skin. Really the only thing you should ever use acetone on is glue and foam sealant.
