Stargate Bartop

TOK:

My game list is pretty small. I think its up to about 35 games. I have MaLa booting right into a Defender game list with Defender (duh), Stargate, Defense Command (a Defender bootleg included for a sense of complete-ness), and Strike Force, a rather unknown Stargate sequel that did away with the controls that make Defender both frustrating and endearing.

Check it out if you haven't. You'll see all the elements of Defender there, but you'll recognize the graphics as Smash TV era hardware.

Here is Moon Patrol, and just for the heck of it I tried a couple vert games. We're getting pretty close to current day. You can see the marquee area is done, the t-molding is now on, but I'm still using the dark tinted bezel.

The great thing about the dark tinted plexi was how it totally hid the screen. Vert games looked pretty cool with no evidence of cropping.

Finally, here is todays work... I took a clear piece of plexi, and masked the monitor area. My intent was to capture the starfield effect on the Stargate bezel. I made my starfield mask using paper plates and different sized nail holes for the stars.

The incredibly complex starfield mask  ;D  and paint. This is Pactra stuff that is made for clear plastic (R/C car bodies specifically). You spray it on the back, and it goes on kind of flat, but the plexi gives it a really nice shine from the front.

The masked clear bezel. I sprayed the stars on randomly first, then took a big chance by spraying the white away from the bezel and letting the overspray land on it for some tiny starts.

I let it dry a few minutes, then painted the black rear coat.

Since the plastic paint won't harm foam, I also painted the white edges of the foam board with it. It didn't really show through the original tinted bezel, but since the monitor area of this one is clear I had to pay a bit more attention to detail.  :P

Here is the final effect. Excuse the pic... This was my test fit and it had smudges all over and you can see distracting side art from another machine reflected. I took other pics, but none showed the starfield effect as clearly as this one. I even painted the starfield theme in the totally hidden area behind the marquee. What a doofus.  ;D

Next up (if I ever stop playing) is to order the marquee from mamemarquees.com.
I also plan to use a real Stargate stencil on the side, but only do the Stargate logo and one or two of the explosions.

I'm open to other suggestions on handling this part. Here is a pic of the original side art.

Found a pic that shows the starfield effect a little better, but its not on the cab (and still smudged from handling). The tiny "overspray" star effect is much clearer in this picture.

Ask Prok if he can make you a scaled down Stargate Stencil w/ only the stargate explosion included. Heck, it may even cost you less that way! ;D

Ha, clever idea. The end result looks great. Even with all your gaming you seem to be getting things done rather quickly  :P
