Loving the artwork mate  8)

What do the Chinese/Japanese characters say? If they don't say anything in particular I would be tempted to use a few less and make them slightly bigger. I love anything Jap style tho  :),  im tempted to have some characters from one of the Japanese space invaders flyers on mine.

The kanji writting actually says bubblegum betty. I have to agree though after seeing it I think I may change how Ive done the japanese writing. Was thinking using "Koi tei" And matching the font type. (Empress in Kanji) Much smaller and more promenent I think. Its just a mock up at the moment. Feeling kinda dry for ideas at the moment.

I really like where this is headed...  a few comments:

1.  I don't like the blue grid in the upper left corner.
2.  I'd like to see what this looks like if you removed all of the blue from the background and enhanced the blue shadow behind the lettering - I think there is too much blue right now for what is a predominently pink cabinet.
3.  Did you draw the girl?  If so...  :o  - I'd love to see what she looks like blowing a bubble out of some pink bubblegum to go with your theme.
4.  I'd try and increase the size of the font to take up more of the space - if you could somehow shape it to fit the area that would be cool too.
5.  I'd match her headband to her gloves, boots and shoulderpads (I'd also like to see what they look like colored pink - not solid but dark on the edges and almost white in the middle like the grey is now).
6.  Go with blue eyes - there isn't any green anywhere and it sticks out.
7.  Ditch the japanese lettering.  I'd suggest incorporating it on your monitor bezel (or somewhere else).  Actually, I'd paint that entire area pink and add the japanese lettering below the screen (the square-shaped piece of plastic that surrounds your monitor).

That's my $0.02.  I LOVE this thing so far!

Javeryh I did draw the girl I originally painted her all pink but found so much pinkl overwhelming as the cab is pink with an awful lot of neon blue scattered around. Blue eyes didnt really consider that....all the girls i draw tend to be inspired by my "BETTER HALF" so they all have big hair and green eyes. But i'll give it a shot and see how it'll look. The blue around the marquee should glow with the sound reactive marquee light (Blue neon) If not blue what colour? Gonna tackle that headband tommorrow after looking again it is way to light compared to the boots, gloves and shoulder pads! :hissy:

If you do not sell of the printer and want to make it work let me know the make and model and I could probably help you out.  That idea of high score tickets was pretty cool.

I write software for barcode printers for my day job, so I could help you with the coding.

it is a stretch but I do not find myself in a position to help much around here so I thought I would offer.

I have changed the colours as suggested by Javeryh and gone for a more "plasticky" look to the lettering increaseing the stroke size where possible. To see the image fullsize click the link below didnt put it directly in the page as it is pretty big! Tried to take on bored the ideas given where possible. I havent placed them on the background yet as the new colours will effect the design of the background.

That looks awesome waveryder!  I hope you didn't think I was coming off as too critical - I really love what you're doing and you have some serious artistic skills.  I think keeping everything pink and blue is the way to go - I can kind of picture what the final cabinet will look like now and I think a lot of people will be asking you where you bought it - it really looks like this came off of a factory assembly line.

I'd stick with the green eyes waveryder.  Otherwise the changes work better with the overall theme.

Kaytrim, I'm curious as to why you think the eyes should be green?  There is no green as far as I know anywhere else on the cab and the blue eyes now match her dress and seem to fit in with the overall theme a little better.  I'm certainly no expert when it comes to this stuff - am I missing something obvious?  The blue eyes look way better to me...

You don't have to have color matching all over the place.  I honestly think that the splash of green will draw the attention to the character more with the green instead of the blue.  Of course there are other attributes of Betty that draw attention as well. :o

eventually a white outline around the fonts instead of the grey one would look cleaner, but thats a question of the personal taste i guess.

Ok last revision and then i'll stop boring you guys with this stuff ;D. Think I have got it:
Decided to go with a new background that was a little less clutered. Followed a musicy theme as the cab also acts as the wifes jukebox. Followed some of the suggestions that have been posted and dismissed a few that I didnt think followed the theme of the cab. (note that the marquee light is blue neon and sound reactive) It has to look good both on and off.

The wife says it has kind of a space channel 5 feel, which is perfect just what I was looking for. Now to get an acetate test print.  ???

I like how the blue background on the right side changes into the pink background on the left side.  Having the blue background on the right side brings out the art from Betty much better.

Great work!

Thanks for all the marquee comments, I have now completed the test print and mounted the marquee in Betty. I have shot a small video (only 30secs) to show you all how it looks with the sound reactive light. It didnt film too well but should at least give you an idea of how Betty's marquee looks.

The sound reactive part looks fairly cool, but I'd think about switching to some white light source, BGB's color's get washed out by the blue.

The cabinets pink with neon and LED Blue highlights. Washing out the background with blue neon is kinda the point! :-\

Hang on you were being specific about the character!

Did you mean the Character and Logo looked washed out? The marquee in the vid is just a test run. I intend to use some acrylic titanium white to completeley block out the blue behind the logo and betty so that only the background diffuses the blue neon. The reason I havent finished the marquee completely yet is that im still waiting for the wife to bring home the A3 laminator.

Boy am I ever glad you got rid of the Chinese characters on the marquee.  To anyone who knows the language it would come out as complete gibberish.  However, if you want Japanese on the cab (perhaps on that bit below the monitor), it would look actually be written as:  バッボガムベッチ or バッボルガムベッチ instead

Incedentally, I'm a touch creeped out but very amused by the artwork, given what the original character looks like.   :laugh2:

Betty is an original character not based on "Atomic Betty" as some people have said, any comparrison is a little sick and twisted! I actually based her upon a piece of graffitti that I pased on the Met line on my way into london. I loved the retro looking oversized head band and shoulder setup reminded me of Reene Laloux's "time masters". The large boobs and big hair just remind me of my better half  >:D

Drew another betty for the kickplate artwork. I wanted to do something that was reminiscent of those chrome girls you see on truck mudflaps, ie; suggestive but not to naughty (Im a dad now after all!!!)

My problem now involves where to get it printed as its quite large. Looked into getting it printed and laminated at Staples but they dont know how to print at 300dpi and have never heard of a *.PSD file. They only know how to blow up pictures of flowers! (unfortunately I am being serious  :banghead:)

It's the headband and shoulder things that define it, man.  What can I say?  I'm a cartoon junkie.  It's also the only cartoon on at lunch around here.  (The name of the cab doesn't help either)

Try your a nearby university/college for printing options.  Some schools have print places that specialize in custom printing (the two schools local to me do).  Incidentally, I think there was a place at a local mall that did printing/laminating/framing as well.  Just some other options.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Sideart designed (Updated 13/12/07)
« Reply #104 on: December 13, 2007, 07:01:54 am »
Not been very well the past couple of days, so i've been curled up with my sketchbook and a cup of lemsip  :(

I knocked out the prelim work on the sideart and spent last night colouring it in photoshop. Decided to go with a gamey theme for the sideart, everything else has had to be "jukeboxey" in theme as this is how the missus uses betty. I went for a dreamcast pad as thats the secondary system in "BGB" and I didnt like the idea of a nondescript joystick on the side.  Thats the last "BGB" image thats going on the cab as the remaining artwork hasnt got any room for a character image. Just the two control panel designs to go.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Winters Here & My Balls Have Turned Blue!
« Reply #107 on: December 14, 2007, 09:49:25 am »
Now those are fine balls!

Well what did you think I meant?

Big thanks to the "Metal Guru" Franco for sorting out the shafts for my Sanwa's JLW's. Wired the joysticks up to the Ipac and added the two ports to Mala. Couldnt be happier. Something always looked like it was missing without illuminated balltops. I used a wide angle LED in my balltop which fitted the base without any modification and soldered the resistor at the bottom of the shaft. Other than that wiring was pretty much bog standard. The light came out brilliant even in the daytime! Now Ive been without my balltops for a while and need to play some Soul Calibur.

I hope you like my balls as much as my better half does  >:D

"Bubble Gum Betty" Dreamcast Revisited (Updated 05/01/08)
« Reply #113 on: January 05, 2008, 08:17:09 am »
Been swamped for a while doing artwork request's (and playing guitar hero  ;D) But I finally found some time to work on some of "BGB's" messier bits. I wasnt very happy with the final dreamcast hack "product" or the mass of cables that it resulted in flowing around Bettys insides. I settled on an idea to solve this. I call it DREAMBOX

First thing I had to do was remove the second expansion slot from each of the dreamcast pad PCBS. Just used a dremel for this and sliced em about 2mm from the mounting place.

The dremel gave a nice clean cut. so I didnt need to worry too much about shorting out the cntrol i/o port on the dreamcast. I had to solder an extra 4 points to my original analogue dreamcast pad hack to key in the digital buttons. This way I can be gauranteed to be able to play everything. I originally thought just using analogue was the way to go.......until Space channel 5 wouldnt work  :'(

The Best £10 I Ever Spent Was On  A Soldering Stand!!

I soldered the 4 Hed directional points to a 4 way changover switch. Then soldered the digital directional points and then finally the line to the DB25 connector that adds other devices to Bettys control panel.
I used a large ABS project box to mount the hacks into. I used 4 standoff feet per controller to mount them to the box and cut the facia with 2 slots for VMU's. The vmu's are removable as I still have to be able to pop em in the gun for confidential mission. I also cut 2 holes for the 4 way toggle switches. That way I can change from analogue or digital controls without any hassle.
I ran a cable grommet to the back of the box to allow the cables to the dreamcast to hang out with out the risk of getting snagged and put in the vga output board.

Who Needs Colour Coded Wire I Know What Each And Every Cable Is For  ;)

The box is now completely tidy inside Betty and can be removed as one solid unit just by disconnecting the DB25 and vga cable. There is still room inside the "Dreambox" for a coders VMU slot which I will get around to at some point.
I have a couple more of these boxes on order as I also want to house my changover switch, ipac, etc. into one box as well. This will allow a nice modular feel to "BGB's" addons rather than a hack feel. Anyway her it is in all its the glory..............

Next Up: The MameBox  ;)

Gotta give a big thanks, hugs and kisses to my mother and father in law for the Electronic Store gift vouchers that have made my "mad scientist" schemes possible thus far.  :notworthy:

Dude your project is just SICK MAN!.

I love it - I want to build one myself now - My wife would kill me......

I would love to see a detaled layout of the Dreambox and the MAMEBOX when it is done.

Really nice stuff!!!

Yeah got it from Maplins. It's good for emergency parts but the staff are useless. You'd think that staff in an electronics store would know a little something about electronics!!! They are much better online though. God I miss Tandy *sniff (radioshack)

awesome cab!! i guess your using these buttons http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/translucentpushbuttons.htm
i thinking about changing mine to these just a quick question about putting the led's in if i dont use the ones that gremlin solutions sell are normal ones like what you have hard to fit? do you still use their bayonet fit led holder?
i've found some 12v wide angles cheap but just wondered if they'd be a pain to fit?
Cheers ;D
